Have you ever unfollowed someone over a fandom opinion?

Naruto: Quite a few actually when some people were starting up a shipping war between NaruHina and SasuSaku, which was for no other reason than for being the “superior” canon ship.

BNHA: No one. Yet.

Is there an unpopular character you like that the fandom doesn’t? Why?

Naruto: Not really sure since a character’s popularity fluctuates. In any case, I love the New Era/Next Gen kids.

BNHA: I think the only things that are unpopular with the fandom that I like are the character designs (mostly the ones that Tumblr tries to “fix”). Plus, I might not like Mineta, but I think the fandom’s hatred is a bit much.

What is the one thing you hate most about your fandom?

Naruto: Certain aspects of it, especially the side that pulled that vindictive shit when the manga ended (i.e. hate-spamming Kishi’s Thank You page, that petition to ban the manga from the U.S., setting up fake accounts to serial downvote The Last, etc.).

BNHA: Mainly the fandom’s overreactive nature. See anything involving Endeavor.

The sort of big gap between those two is something I actually sort of love. Cus yeah, I like the idea of being a warlock, but you bet I’m Lawful Good still. :P

(1/2) I've been thinking about this for a while, but I'd like your opinion on this as well, especially because you could put it into much better words than I can: what actually determines canon? I like to believe that the author's word trumps everything else, and everything the author creates for the storyline or agrees is part of their storyline is canon no matter how fandom feels about it. I like to think that the author knows their own story and characters more than anyone else.

(2/2) However, others believe that if the author isn't the primary creator of something related to the series, or if something goes against common interpretations/analyses, then it's not canon. I think this makes the concept of canon very subjective - pretty much anything you don't like in a series can be argued to be "not canon" then. Whereas I prefer a more concrete, objective definition of canon as I stated before. But I'd like your thoughts on it, if you don't mind.

I’ve had this discussion with a friend of mine who is a philosophy major and we’ve gone back and forth, but as far as I’m concerned, the person who owns the story, generally speaking the writer as it would be, is the determiner of canon, with exceptions proving the rule. Author’s word trumps all in my opinion, and death of the author is a faulty and broken concept, though not directly related to this its at least part of the whole conception. You’re right, a subjective application of what is ‘canon’ essentially means NOTHING is canon, which is a flaw with many arguments relying on subjective reasoning 

A concrete definition of canon is the only definition that works.
