Kuroma “Kuromarama” Review
The lead track “20+Centuries” kicks Kuromarama into a very promising start. By all means a fast paced, exhilarating, and fun song. A bit in the vain of MGMT, which shares Kuroma’s Hank Sullivant as a member. Then by track two, Kuroma shifts to a more melancholy reflective in “Running People.” This shift is jarring, but gives you a sense of how varied the choices are on this album. While listed as “psych pop,” I’d say most of Kuromarama comes off more in line with power pop with psych flourishes (think “The dB’s”). They veer into white boy funk in “Passionate People,” which thankfully they move away from. On “Case Logic,” they go into that 80′s synth pop stuff the kids like these days. The last two tracks return to psych, with “30601″ having a sort of a Byrd’s twang, and “Thee Only Childe” being what I assume is a Thee Oh Sees tribute. Is this sporadic-ness showcasing Kuroma’s versatility, or the result of indecisiveness? I’m not sure. Maybe it’ll become clearer on the next album.
