Kuroru had just been playing in the living room with his favorite stuffed animal when there was the loud noise of someone banging on the door. He didn’t really understand what was going on, when his mother scooped him up, and ran with him to another room, telling him to hide and not make a sound no matter what until it was safe again, just like when they would play hide and seek. And Kuroru was very good at hide and seek.
So he’d hidden away in a wooden chest in his mother’s room, hugging onto his little stuffed bunny. He’d hidden in here before, so there was a blanket and a little pillow. There were a lot of sounds just outside the room, and he couldn’t help it, he peeked out just a little, the lid barely lifted a crack, so he could see what was going on..
Which was probably a mistake. Because he saw and heard some man he didn’t know shouting, saw red suddenly dripping onto the floor, and splattering a little against the box he was in, saw it when his mother hit the ground.. It was barely just a few minutes really, but to the almost 4 year old, it felt like forever. And then the man who had been shouting was on the floor too, and there was a lot more red, and he could see glimpses of someone else in the house too--
And that’s when he curled back up inside the little chest, the lid making only the softest noise when it closed, and he pulled the little blanket over himself as much as he could. All he wanted was for his mom to get back up again, and being a child, part of him kept thinking she would, that she was going to eventually open up the box lid, and pick him up, pull him out, and cuddle him again. But somehow, he knew she wasn’t going to at the same time, and so it was taking everything he had not to start crying. She had told him to be quiet.. He had to be quiet..
