watched a 2013.10.18 vienna german-language bootleg of Elisabeth available here between 05-06/1/2026, cast and thoughts below the cut!!!
Cast (as far as I could find):
Annemieke van Dam | Elisabeth
Oliver Arno | Der Tod
Kurosch Abbasi | Luigi Lucheni
Franziskus Hartenstein | Franz Joseph
Lukas Perman | Rudolf (note: literally credited in the video as "rodulf" so. maybe it's someone else. overall this cast list was pretty faulty, so there might be some other things missing.)
Caroline Sommer | Sophie
Bettina Bogdany | Ludovika/Frau Wolf
Christian Peter Hauser | Max
this is very clearly a bootleg. shaky camera and the like. sound quality is pretty good overall though. you gotta watch it with both earbuds in though. as upscalings go this is one of the less horrendous. the resolution is too good. I feel like i'm seeing this all too intimately.
similar blocking and staging as the 2012 Essen I watched last month, more staged and a bit more interesting, not just them sitting. a lot of it comes from the 1992 Vienna, which I find interesting. the lighting however was really just underwhelming. felt like it was sort of just there. people's faces were glowing white orbs at times (though that's partially the fault of the boot [no shame to the master whatsoever]).
I liked abbasi, he acted through the role, but he opted out of pretty much every high note, which is interesting because most of the time he does them fine. maybe he was feeling ill, idk.
arno was good! (that's surprising). He was in more makeup than he had been in the 2009 Antwerp and just generally more of a lighter tenor. he seemed more comfortable with the funky gender aspects (though still using the jackets rather than the dresses but that's the prods fault). he wasn't forceful at all which was really interesting, his wenn ich tanzen will seemed more like he was sure of her giving into him rather than her trying to force her. he seemed confident. his der schleier fällt killed me, but that song always gets me.
van dam was awesome because she's annemieke and we love her. her high notes were generally pretty confident and she acted through it really well (like really well). some of her really high notes (end of ich gehoer nur mir & the reprise) were shaky and unconfident, but these things happen.
this sophie was also wonderful. really really strong voice, she seemed genuinely angry. her acting was wonderful.
effective chorus on prolog. the arrangement was pretty solid and interesting, some things I hadn't seen before.
liked the guitar on wie du. van dam really sounded like a young girl. Elisabeth and max played off of each other pretty well.
you could really see the lines of the wigs, not sure if that's the production's or the boot's fault.
here I write: "UGH RONDO AGAIN. FML. ok I liked him singing it. he sounded good ngl." so clearly he did it well.
horns at the beginning of jedem gibt er das seine were faulty at best unfortunately, though i've noticed that a lot frequently in more recent productions so there might just be a new arrangement there. there was a rotating eagle seal by him which was kind of distracting.
Sophie was good in so wie man denkt. there's nice shot of franziskus hartenstein's ass if you're into that. here I write: "wow he really is autism coded Vanessa you weren't kidding (why would anyone ever kid about Franz Joseph autism….)." no fj counterpoint to helene's little bit she sings.
they did the floating coach for nichts ist schwer!!! their voices blend so well. you could really tell they were supposed to be on a ferris wheel here with the shadow work and lighting (threw shadows of the rest of the wheel on the walls). it was really really well done and I give so much props to the lighting and set design.
here I write: "ohhhhhh my godddddddd the lying on the floor in die kaiserin is a reference to them lying down before the wedding in this show……"
idk what they were doing with the wedding robes. lucheni like waved them around and they had to be manually put on them. alle fragen was ineffective. i'm never gonna understand this blocking and choreo am I. however they look at each other before walking down the aisle and I had to pause the video because it was so hopeful and trusting and I just sat there. Jesus Christ. I recommend this proshot to my sisifranzes out there.
I liked sie passt nicht. there were rotating mirrors that were utilized well to make it look like there were more people than there were and we could see sisi and fj walking behind them.
really liked the wedding dance. standard waltz rather than her arm being down, lots of crazy spins. everyone falls down for totentanz. I wanna say she was in maya's original wedding dress but I'm not sure.
my tangent on arno's der letzte tanz here survives from my original in its entirety: "arno sounds so much like seibert. will he make me cry with laß die welt versinken the same way? probably not. his voice is a little smoother, a little less strong (not weak per se, but he doesn't seem so much like an immediate tod, was definitely a Rudolf first). his letzte tanz is a lot of felix martin (felix martin!) and thomas borchert (thomas borchert…), but his acting is more of a later uwe stuff. I think it was good getting him back after he could let the role settle more into his voice and acting rather than jumping straight into death from Rudolf. no high notes though."
really liked sophie's eine kaiserin. I don't usually write about that song, but she was really good. confident voice.
I love annemieke van dam when she sings ich gehör nur mir. her voice is so gooooooood. she really did look like Elisabeth. the blocking for this song was generally underwhelming but i'll let it slide because I know I would kill myself out of love if I saw it live. her voice cracked and slipped on her high note :(.
abbasi's voice was underwhelming in die ersten vier jahre. arno's voice was so soft for the first act die schatten. he sounds better in German. whattttt was the blocking for it though. they just like walked away from each other while fj stumbled around in between them.
die fröliche apokalypse was good.
they were all set up for Elisabeth mach auf during kind oder nicht.
fj looked like he was in a barbie box for Elisabeth mach auf. they shouted at each other for the fight. van dam clearly was trying to make the monologue (ich have ein förmliches ultimatum aufgesetzt…) in that she was delivering it differently than everyone i've seen. it seemed like they didn't really have blocking for death in this number. he just stood there and talked to the audience.
milch was good.
you can see Elisabeth brushing her hair through the mirror in schoenheitspflege
ich will dir nur sagen was good. I liked this fj (franziskus hartenstein). she's in the star dress alright. the blending (of the voices, not the mixing of the recording) was ok on that song. again her last high note wasn't very confident.
camera blacks out during éljen. lots of turns and taps on the trumpet solo which I will attribute to intentional improvisation rather than a lack chops.
I liked the weird carriage wall thing for wenn ich tanzen will. the blocking and choreo, she swirled her skirt around a lot. he seemed more confident of her giving into him rather than forceful, which is a nice change. here I write: "yesssssss Oliver spot correctly. we love a king who totally took twelve years of ballet." I think he harmonized with her on a different note than usual which again was a nice change.
some guys pulled down the bed before mama wo bist du, which was interesting. I liked the dolls in his room mimicking the dolls in hers during Schwartzer prince but Jesus they didn't have eyes and it was terrifying. this kid had a good voice. arno was trying to be creepy but it just came off wholesome. a lot better than his 2009 which was just emotionless. no cat reaction whatsoever which was a reaction in and of itself.
the patients sang as a group during irrenhaus which is interesting. it was generally ok, I didn't find it too distracting. this windisch seemed more put together. nichts nichts gar nichts seemed a bit sped up. her voice was really powerful. mostly a park and bark but she acted through it and gestured and gave facial expressions which I really liked and kept it interesting.
flash warning for the beginning of wir oder sie.
horsies for wir oder sie!
van dam was really giving pia douwes during maladie. and also Freddy mercury. her high notes were the strongest highest thing i've heard in forever.
old age makeup on Sophie came out of nowhere, looked like she grew twenty years over two scenes.
here I write: "they were talking in the atemao discord once about how Lukas Perman sees a mans cock and thinks is anyone gonna suck that and not even wait for an answer and. yeah." the mix on die schatten got picked up at a frequency that sounded like a fire alarm directly in my ear but aside from that it was good. Lukas Perman was wonderful. something about the hearse bed being folded up and sent away was like. really moving to me. like wow he's not a kid anymore he can't just rest anymore even in his own bed. the public is looking. the public is waiting. the ensemble was wearing their alle fragen outfits! it was cool.
idk what the set was doing for streitgesprach but I loved it.
fj's voice gets lower in the second act. like he was singing the notes definitely but leaning more into baritenor territory. which was neat.
Elisabeth was prettttttttty. she just seemed tired in wie du reprise.
she walked past him into the chair before wenn ich dein spiegal waer. he sounded like Andy bieber a little. good high notes. song was moving in general. here I write: "he has a nice voice for this. I almost understand why they had him doing it INTO HIS FORTIES. sorry. i'm better now." followed immediately by: "HE SAID MAMA ICH BRAUCH' DICH RATHER THAN MUTTER ICH BRAUCH' DICH YESSSSSSSSS." it sped up a bit at the end.
insane 'also lass du mich im stich'. standard mayerling waltz, really short kiss. arno's death seemed to hesitate for a moment waiting for Rudolf to make up his mind. stone cold walkaway, neat and well done. not as cunty as Felix but we can't all be as cunty as Felix I guess.
the mourners for totenklage came up as the todesengeln leave. sisi seemed absolutely wrecked by the suicide. her ending bit to death was wonderful and his response was really good too. faded directly into mein neues sortiment.
boote in der nacht was good.
the rotating platform for am deck was underwhelming. didn't really tip that much, and (maybe it was the further away camera) everyone was just sort of lying there. fj and death seemed to be having like a respectful conversation rather than yelling.
abbasi's delivery of the monologue was interesting. he seemed far away, like he was suddenly regretting it.
horn player was sharp. i'm in love with annemieke's mach die nacht sum morgen. wish I could've seen her more during this number rather than the camera focusing entirely on him but oh well. he just stood there and waited for her to come to him but once she got to him it took him four seconds to raise his arms and then he buried his face in her head so like. genuinely wonderful. he didn't take his eyes off her. wonderful. I love him actually. I want you guys to know that I paused this video to make a gif of their kiss. wonderful. iconic. no notes. Jesus Christ. his hand lingers. oh my God.
overall really good! standouts were Oliver arno's death, annemieke van dam in general, and pretty much the whole cast. really great. not great things were the lighting being iffy. this was really good!!! I also liked the blocking for the most part.
Meeting Kurosch motherfucking Abbasi, my idol, my hero, my god, and then posing with the ORIGINAL PHOTO STRIP THINGY (idfk what it's called) FROM 1992, THE EXACT ONE ETHAN HELD IN HIS HANDS, was.... something. To say the least.
One of the best days in my life. I love Kurosch so much and was so excited to meet him and then he pulled this shit out like brother what (even left me alone with it for a few minutes, cause he had to talk with someone; just said "make some pictures and videos with it, brb" 😭😭)
Yeah we ended up talking for like half an hour before he had to go, it was so special 🥹 his hugs healed me omg. Bro even told me why FRANZISKUS HARTENSTEIN left the musical business (I as Franziskus Hartenstein Fan #1 was internally screaming) and told me some other stuff about old productions. It was so nice talking with him cause he's just as big of an Elisabeth nerd like me 😭
Love this man so much
The 2012 Elisabeth album cutting the last Elisabeeeeeth! in half at the end of Éljen is criminal, why does it end at the start of Wenn ich tanzen will????
