Hey, uh. This just destroyed me. Again.

This is hands-down my favourite end-of-STYDI ever caught on camera; I've said it before but it bears repeating that this moment in the show really defines for me both how I feel about an actor's Phantom portrayal and also how I feel about the Phantom/Christine relationship going on from here. (Like, this is the deciding factor in whether I spend the next 2 hours agonising over "they could have made it work!!!" versus being 100% on board with Christine running as far away as possible.)

ANYWAY. Ana Marina. Simon Pryce. Hands.

In my opinion it really paid off that they slowed down this scene and really let everyone marinate in the discomfort of it all. I'm obsessed with how she picks up the mask and looks at it almost reverentially before giving it back to him: it means something different to her now and that gesture itself is like... almost apologetic. She strokes the edge of it??? Hello???

And then most phantoms turn away here but he maintains eye contact with her the entire time, (and she with him! She doesn't look away!) and then there's the little tilt of the head with the nod and the smile like, it's ok (please please please let it be ok?) and how his hand hovers like he wants to reach out to her but doesn't dare - his discomfort and indecision are really, really palpable and I think this comes across as him very genuinely trying to process what has just happened, it reads to me as though he has - I don't know how to phrase it - dissociated beyond the point of embarrassment? Just sitting there staring at the woman he loves as if he isn't physically present in front of her at all.

Usually I see this scene played as though he's really so unused to human interaction that he thinks grabbing her arm and running off with her is the appropriate thing to do, but here it's like. He knows it isn't appropriate or right. He knows he has messed this up and whatever he does next will only make it worse, but he has to do something and he genuinely doesn't know what to do that will make it any better.

Because they let the moment linger you can feel that he's acutely aware of how out of his depth this all is and I just, aaargh. (And also, that few seconds where neither of them does anything makes it all the more intriguing that Christine doesn't offer him anything here - ie. usually it all happens so quickly you can forgive her just sitting there in shock, but this time it isn't like that and there are a few different ways that could be interpreted, I think).

guy at the bottom was supposed to be a smiley face but she was a little wonky so I tried to give her ears. that didn't work so I gave her limbs instead and then eyebrows because iw wanted her to be max happiness. her mouth is supposed to be open but it just looks like her tongue is out

“Hopelessly Devoted To You” from Grease is a classic. Very comfortably in my range.

“Maria” from West Side Story, but raised key.

The rooftop scene (pre AIAOY) from Phantom of the Opera is always fun to act out.

“Le balcon” from Roméo et Juliette (German version). I sing all the parts lol.

13. favourite musical that’s never been on broadway - Roméo et Juliette (Gérard Presgurvic).

Love this show so much. I actually bought a new CD for this show, even though I typically thrift my CDs and just hope for some musical ones to be there. This show has been to so many places, please let it go to Broadway.

14. favourite revival of a musical - 1st Vienna revival of Elisabeth.

It’s the ultimate production. It’s very similar to the original production, which I absolutely adore. However, I like it slightly better just because it has “Wenn ich tanzen will” and “Streit Vater und Sohn” (not the first prod to do it, but still). At this point, WITW has become a staple of the show, so we need it. And I don’t really listen to the latter on the album, but I think it’s necessary during the show. Can’t miss Rudolf if he dies as soon as you meet him. Give him extra stage time to make it hurt more. Of course, I have to give this production props for keeping the Mayerling dress (screaming and crying- please bring it back).

16. favourite musical that’s underrated - Carrie the Musical.

I feel like it’s relatively well known because of the movie, the disaster of the Broadway production, or because it’s commonly performed in community theaters and schools. Even so, I haven’t seen people gush over it like I do other musicals. No one ever talks about how much they love love love it. Although, William, you might know more about this musical’s community than I do? Perhaps?

I was obsessed with this show in middle school. I even listened to it while I got ready for prom, which is very appropriate for the occasion.

22. Favourite musical to sing along to

Phantom of the Opera, unequivocally. At this point I've memorised the entire libretto in both English and German and the Russian isn't far away either 😅 My vocal training is predominantly classical so I think the Phantom score scratches the operatic-genre itch more than my other favourite musicals do.

23. Favourite lyric from a musical

Oh gosh this is difficult. There are so many good ones to choose from! But I think it has to be «Вечность или крах, все в ваших руках» / "Eternity or devastation? It lies in your hands" from Master and Margarita, when I hear that line I get chills every. single. time.

oh man that's difficult. I don't think I could definitively rank them but definitely my top ten in whatever order would be Elisabeth, Pippin, Sunday in the Park with George, Assassins, Carrie, Fun Home, Next to Normal, The Fix, Black Swan, and Mozart das Musical. i've seen six of these live, which I think is impressive

18. favorite musical you never talk/blog about

Carrie si definitely a top five, but I don't post about it (much). I've only seen it once, in November (?) by a very small theatre. I got super into Carrie in general a few years ago and this was the version of it that stuck the longest in my brain. rip marin mazzie.

"spin for the genius who fixes what's broke/spin for the mirrors and spin for the smoke" (spin, the fix) (made one million times better by the fact that it's followed up with "spin for the lady who lives in the shoe")

For anyone curious, this was Japanese merch, probably from around 2015–2018. I got mine secondhand on Mercari Japan last year, after searching for one for a few years. They’re not common, and shipping can be a pain, but they do pop up sometimes on Mercari Japan or Yahoo Auctions Japan.
