Philippine Art Awards 2016 Shortlisted 2016 Kurt Rojas Artist Statement: The disputed Islands have become an alarming issue to the Filipinos for the past years. It is where fishermen find a fortune to provide for their families amidst the country’s extreme economic crisis. It is a group of islands home to the wonderful marine species and natural resources that could save the sinking economy of this country home to millions of Filipinos which the heart for nationalism was abandoned after being colonized by numerous empires. No wonder why another powerful country did not hesitate to do everything it can to obtain absolute ownership of these islands even if it is against the law of the sea. This commentary painting aims to bring Filipinos another realization about our position when powerful countries diverged, leaving uncertainties about the future of our children. The need for supreme power has awakened the sleeping giant that by history known for being the creator of a great wall that ensured their own interests. The great wall for this period of time will sail across their nine-dash line claim as a sign of oppression which may result in the fall of a nation once named Pearl of the Orient Seas.

RELENTLESS CONSUMPTION

Ever since the world was created, the most powerful ability of every human being to increase survivability is by being able to consume. Human society have developed a primitive and inefficient ways of collecting resources, so those that thrived were ones that developed high rates of consumption and new innovations for resource gathering. It is in our nature that the basic human needs for survival are food, shelter, and a partner for reproduction. But for us human being, acquiring enough resources is not the end of it.

The principle of competition is closely related to consumption, here comes our behavior when it comes to strengthening our individual protection and reputation. One must be above the other in terms of resources in order to gain more power over the other. A never ending global issue that human being consciously practiced. Environmental, societal, political, etc, this human behavior has crafted numerous troubles which made us the greatest/greediest consumer of the world.

The Thread and the Kite by Kurt Rojas 3rd Place Winner 48th Shell National Students Art Competition @Ayala Museum | October 20, 2015 There are thousands of things that are considered the best part of our life; it can come from the mundane and complex part of our journey. The best part of our life can also come from various forms that are meant to be appreciated. When we were a child, our observations of reality began at home, we were once a symbol of innocence and hope, we never knew that the simple idea of flying a kite symbolizes fate, freedom, exploring new horizons and achieving dreams anchored in reality. We play, and we take part of the joyful moment of life, setting aside the reality of living in the big picture of society. Sometimes, when we went home devastated, we ask ourselves why we should fly a kite when afterwards it will only be tangled in wires or destroyed by the wind. These experiences we had are considered a thread that links us to one another. In the spiritual context, thread symbolizes the link between thoughts and emotion merging with our soul. Thus, at some certain point of our lives when we decide to become the weaver of our destiny, the twisted threads caused by unpredictable consequences merge into an alluring and substantial tapestry of life. Memorable experiences are the best part of our life; these are the things that we all can relate, to develop our social and personal relationship. We may unconsciously neglect this, but it is important for us to become our own friend as well. This measures our ability to know more about ourselves and how we can handle ourselves in any situation. If you want to fly like a kite, dance with the wind and remain connected to your true source of life. Don't get tired, don't let go. Highlighting the experience of flying a kite is the best part of our youthful journey; it teaches us how to become a better person in facing the reality of life.
