Summary:
“I believe that you both will resolve this. Red loves you a lot, he might be regretting fighting just as much as you”
“Doesn’t mean he isn’t hurt” He mumbled, “A-ah…Right” Papyrus replied.
“Did you say something you regret?” Blue asked timidly
He nodded slowly…”Course I did...I just..the worst part is...I knew it would hurt him… I was just..I was so….I didn't mean to? I mean..I meant it at the moment, but…”
The pain in his soul was back. He remembered Red's face of betrayal at his words, the silent judgement, and god he hated it, most of his anger had disappeared right at that moment, and then he had fled.

Not ready, I get it
Don't want complications, you gotta focus on yourself
Sans's finger hovered over the call button, his soul speeding up a little as he absentmindedly looked over the familiar number. Taking a deep breath to calm himself, he pressed the button. It rang twice before picking up.
"Hello?"
You cancel, no worries, it's all good
No hurry, your heart belongs to someone else
"Heya, Red," Sans replied, unable to stop his smile and a pale blue blush at the sound of his crush's voice. "I wanted to ask you about our meeting later today."
"Oh, uh... 'bout that..."
"Yeah?"
"I'm... not gonna be able to come. Uhm... Boss has, uh, some stuff he wants me to do then. Maybe another day?"
You know I'm always here to keep you company, company
But I can't help but feel it's not enough for me
"Oh... yeah. Yeah, o' course, that's fine," Sans answered, barely keeping his disappointment out of his tone.
"Great, thanks. I'm sorry about cancelin' so suddenly... but I'll call ya later, and we can figure out another time."
"Okay. That's okay. I'll, uh, talk to you later then. Bye."
"Bye."
As soon as the call ended, Sans tossed his phone to the other side of the couch and let out a sigh, hugging his knees to his chest.
Maybe I don't wanna be just friends
See you only on the weekends
Sorry, hope you understand
I like you a little too much for that
Rejected again—or, good as. Sans groaned. He'd loved Red for as long as he could remember. Many times, he was sure Red loved him back, but neither made a move. They were only friends, and they didn't even see each other often due to their separate universes.
Lately, Sans had been getting tired of it. He kept trying to get closer to Red, inviting him over more or setting up meeting places. But Red kept canceling.
Maybe I don't wanna be just friends
Always hearing 'bout your ex
Sorry, there's no going back
I like you a little too much for that
Maybe I don't wanna be-
When they did meet, half of what Red talked about was his ex, Underswap Sans. They'd broken up nearly a year ago, but Red wouldn't move on. Though he never showed it, it frustrated Sans to no end.
Why wouldn't Red notice him? Why couldn't he see that Sans loved him?
If I'm such a nice guy and you had a great time
Why don't we kick it up a notch?
A week passed, and they finally met. Red agreed to meet at Grillbys, and Sans had lunch with him there. They talked, they laughed, they made dozens of puns. But Sans found himself wanting more.
"I'm glad you could make it today," Sans said breathlessly. It was the laughter, he told himself, even as Red's smile at his words made him choke.
"Me too. You're—" Red coughed. "This was real fun."
How about you come over
Move in to me closer and let my hands give it a shot
"Yeah, it was," Sans agreed. He paused. "Hey, uh, Red?"
"Hm?"
"Do you... wanna come chill at my house? I mean, ya don't have to, but..."
"I, uh..." There was a tense pause, then to Sans's surprise, Red responded, "Yeah, actually. That'd be nice."
Sans grinned. He hesitated, then offered a hand. "You wanna take a shortcut?"
You know I'm always here to keep you company, company
But I can't help but feel it's not enough for me
Red grinned back and took his hand. With a snap of his fingers, Sans teleported them both to his living room.
"OH, SANS! YOU'RE BACK!" Papyrus hurried over from the kitchen, and his ever-present smile widened when he saw Red. "AND RED CAME AS WELL! WELCOME!"
"Heh, thanks," Red chuckled.
"We're gonna be in my room, Paps," Sans told his brother, leading Red upstairs.
"OKAY! HAVE FUN!"
Maybe I don't wanna be just friends

They reached Sans's room, and only when he lifted an arm to close the door did he realize he was still holding Red's hand. His eyes lingered too long on their interlocked fingers, and Red noticed, too. They stepped apart with awkward coughs and blushes, Sans moving to close the door and Red sitting down on the foot of the bed. After a moment's hesitation, Sans sat down next to him.
They sat in silence, avoiding each other's eyes. Questions burned in Sans's mind. He wanted to ask, but he was scared of the possible answers. At the same time... he didn't know how much longer he could go on like this. He needed to know.

"Red, I... can I ask you somethin'?"
Red glanced at him. "Yea? Go ahead."
Sans took a deep breath. "What do you see me as, honestly?"
"What do you mean?"
"Like... a friend, or...?"
Red stared at the floor. "I... you know I hate questions like this."
"I know. But... I need to know."
"Why?"
Sans closed his eyes.
Just friends, just friends, just friends
Maybe I don't, maybe I don't wanna be
Just friends, just friends, just friends
Maybe I don't, maybe I don't wanna be
"Because I love you."
"You... h-huh?" Red spluttered.
Sans chuckled. "Yeah."
"Why? How? I'm never as nice to you as you are to me."
"I disagree. Besides, just canceling a few plans or not letting me see your universe isn't gonna change how I feel," Sans replied.
"But... I... I don't understand..." Red mumbled. "I... we can't... I can't do this again."
Not ready, I get it
Don't want complications
But I just gotta say it
Maybe I don't, maybe I don't, maybe I don't
Sans sighed. "I understand you're still upset about him, Red. But you can't spend your life like this. Blue isn't coming back, so stop feeling sorry for yourself and expecting him to, and start paying attention to the people who care. Start paying attention to me."
"I..."
Red blinked at him. Tears were starting to form, and Sans worried he'd gone too far. Then, Red chuckled.
"Heh... I guess you're right. I've been so focused on the past... I ain't seen the possible future right in front of me."

It was Sans's turn to blink in bewilderment. "Wha-?"
Red snorted. "You, dumbass," he said affectionately. "I love you, too. I was just too damn stubborn to accept that fact until now."
A dark blue blush appeared on Sans's cheeks. "O-oh."
Red took Sans's hands, his face turning a cherry red. "Yeah. So, um... sorry about that."
"It's okay. You're here, and we've figured it out now. That's all I care about," Sans replied softly.
He scooted closer to Red and wrapped his arms around him. Red froze but soon melted into the embrace, hugging Sans back. After a moment, he pulled away and gazed at Sans. He cupped his face, blushing.
"C-can... can I-?"
Just friends, just friends, just friends
Maybe I don't, maybe I don't wanna be
Just friends, just friends, just friends
Maybe I don't, maybe I don't wanna be
In reply, Sans did it for him.
His soul leaped, a rush of joy and love surging through him as he kissed Red, and Red kissed back.
