A little info about the story:

Crossing Paths follows the Star Sanses, the Bad Guys, and other characters as their paths begin to collide across different universes. What starts as a simple accident slowly leads to fights, unexpected encounters, new relationships and changes that will affect the characters as the story continues.

Shorter (half size) chapters, more frequent uploads

I can’t promise I can stick to either one, as I’m kind of happy with my chapter lengths as they are but I can make an effort to try and make shorter ones, with more frequent uploads, if you’d all like.

The shorter chapters would kind of be, 1 scene of about 2000-3000 words. My current chapters are usually 2 or 3 scenes of 4000-5000 words.

I had a go at an even longer one in the last chapter which was about 7000 words. It was good to read, but I think would delay chapters (needlessly) past the upload schedule I like.

I’m open to trying new things and seeing if it works for me. But if you prefer the chapters as they are, I won’t mess with anything!

A Reprieve (Undertale) Chapter 27

One second, you were in a warm house, pressed against an even warmer skeleton. The next, you were stumbling over damp earth and pine needles. Red kept you steady. The warmth of his hands settled on your hips and the small of your back. When your head stopped spinning, you finally recognized where you’d been brought.

It was a clearing, not far from the cabin you had all stayed in over the weekend. Leaves in bright oranges, reds, and yellows rustled overhead, and the musical bubbling of a nearby stream wove among the hooting of an owl and the distant call of a wolf or coyote. It was surreal.

“sorry, sweetheart,” Red mumbled, breaking the magical atmosphere. Your attention drifted to him, snapping back to reality, only to see him looking down at you with a sheepish grin. “shortcut was rough. had to get you out of there. too many voices. too much noise.” You nodded, still dazed. The sharp ache beneath your sternum had you curling tighter against his ribcage, seeking comfort. The pain dulled from the proximity to his buzzing soul, but you knew that the danger was far from over…

“i’m not doing this alone,” Red continued with a huff. There was renewed sense of urgency in his tone as he turned you toward the sound of running water. “if i’m gonna bond with you, sweetheart, i’m dragging his sorry ass into it, too. we’re doing this together.”

Your heart jumped into your throat at the declaration, but your attention was pulled toward a spot near the edge of a stream. There, sitting on a fallen log with his back facing you, was a familiar blue hoodie. His shoulders were slumped, and blue magic sparked over his skull like static. He stiffened immediately when he sensed that he wasn’t alone, but refused to turn around to face them.

Sans. Even from this distance, you could see the sheen of blue sweat on his bones. It made something in your chest twist. The skeleton beside you—so similar in appearance but so very different—did not slow down. A twig snapped beneath his sneaker when he stomped to a halt a few feet away from the log. He shrugged off his jacket, draping it over your shoulders without a second thought. The warmth from his bones sank into your skin, stopping the light tremble that had begun before it could escalate into full-blown shivering.

“yo.”

Sans didn’t lift his head. If he heard Red, he pretended that he didn’t. He kept as still as a statue, only his shoulders and ribcage moving as he took deep breaths. It was as if he was trying desperately not to break…

“yo, classic,” Red repeated, holding you tighter, his voice sharp. “quit actin’ like you’re the only one sufferin’! look at ‘em!”

That got Sans to move. Not fast, but he lifted his head enough that you could see his face. His eyelights had reappeared, but they were dim, distant. They brightened only when they landed on you, but even then, it was minimal. You knew, without a doubt, that he believed he didn’t deserve to even look at you.

“go home, red,” he finally spoke. His words were brittle, his voice hollow. Your heart was breaking for him. “take them back. alphys can…she can figure something else out. i’m just gonna make it worse.”

Red let out a laugh that was more snarl than amusement. He didn’t let you go. Rather, he marched the both of you forward until you were standing right in front of the log. The jacket that was basically drowning you in fabric and fur brushed against Sans’s patella. “you listen to me, you self-pitying pile of bones!” he growled, eyelights flaring bright. “there ain’t ‘somethin’ else’. al ran the numbers. the human ran the numbers. even the loud one—alice—figured it out. it’s us! it’s always been us!”

Sans visibly flinched. His hollow expression crumbled at the sight of you so close to him. His skeletal hands trembled as they reached up to cup your hands, afraid to put any sort of pressure against your brittle frame. “kitten,” he whispered, voice shaking. His gaze drifted over the eyepatch, the scars, the too-pale pallor of your skin. “look at you. i did this.”

You inched closer, cautious. You didn’t want him to disappear on you again. You didn’t want to make the wrong move, but you also couldn’t allow him to beat himself up for something that wasn’t his fault. With a stubborn set of your jaw, you settled yourself beside him on the log. Sans stared at you like you were a loaded gun and he was waiting for the trigger to be pulled.

“i’m poison,” he choked out, shrinking into his hoodie. His shoulders hunched up around where ears would be if he had any. You kept your fingers firmly gripped around his wrists, refusing to let him go. “my magic is eating you alive. if i touch your soul…if I connect with you, it might just finish the job…”

“or,” Red interrupted, impatient, “it might fix the circuit. give that pressure somewhere to go.

“i’m scared too, vanilla,” Red huffed, his eyelights sliding off to the side as he revealed a vulnerable piece of himself. “i’m terrified i’m gonna crush her. i’ve got enough lv to sink a ship, and you’ve got enough karma to drown one. we’re not exactly prince charmings.” His gaze moved back to you, expression softening into something raw and real. “but y/n wants us. they chose us. us. the trash and the tragedy.”

Trash and tragedy? Is that what they really thought about themselves? A tear slipped down your cheek. Without a word, without drawing attention to it, Red reached out and wiped it away. The rasp of bone against human skin echoed like the blast of a cannon in the silence of the clearing. To you, they were the ones who made you laugh when you wanted to cry. The bad puns, the midnight snacks, the unasked protection… They held you when the world got too loud…

Sans looked from your cheek, at where the tear fell, up to Red’s determined face. Finally, finally, the fight drained out of him. Hope flickered weakly in his sockets despite the exhaustion permanently etched into his skull. A short breath escaped his teeth that might’ve been a laugh if he wasn’t so tired.

“i’m sorry—“ he started, but you shook your head immediately in protest. The meaning was clear: DON’T.

“heh,” Sans huffed, but went on anyway. “no, I mean it. i’m…i’m sorry i left. i thought—“ His voice caught, but he forced it to steady. “i thought if I got away from you, it’d stop.” Your fingers curled into his, but he made no move to back away. He took a breath, admitting the thing he’d been chewing on out here alone: “i’m still scared.”

Red let out a shuddering breath of his own from where he still stood. His shoulders dropped, the tension from earlier draining out of him. He knelt down on your other side, taking one of your hands from his counterpart. You were now tethered between them: Red on your left, Sans on your right. Red and blue. The “bad boy” and the “comedian”.

“y/n,” Sans murmured, his thumb rubbing over your knuckles. A faint blue flushed his cheekbones. His eyelights searched your face, his expression turning serious. “do you even know what a soulbond fully entails? it isn’t just feelings. it’s magic. permanent. it means we’re inside your head, and you’re in ours. it’s messy. it’s…a lot.”

You paused. Technically, no, you didn’t know. At least, not fully. You knew it was intimate. You knew it was powerful and permanent. But the specific mechanics? The magic involved? You offered him an understanding, albeit sheepish, smile. You shrugged. Honestly? You’d read enough books to get the gist, and you really, really didn’t want to go through another twenty chapters of slow-burn pining and misunderstandings to figure it out. You were tired. You were hurting. But you loved them. That was enough for you.

A startled, wet laugh left his teeth at your explanation. Seeing the quiet resolve in your eyes, his expression melted. “heh. guess ya got a point, kitten. we’ll figure it out as we go.”

Red made a gagging sound. “gross.”

Your eyes narrowed, and for the first time in what felt like ages, a playfulness sparked. You signed at Red with deliberate emphasis, a smug expression on your face as you used one of the signs he, himself, had taught you in the first days you knew him. Red’s eyelights widened. Sans’s grin sparked back to life.

“you little—“ Red’s jaw dropped, but there was amusement dancing in his sockets. Sans wheezed. The crimson-eyed skeleton barked out a laugh. “yeah, okay. you’re gonna fit in just fine.”

You smiled, feeling the heat blooming in your cheeks at the casual acceptance. Sans held your gaze, studying you closely. Fate had tied you to him. The one he’d tried so desperately to protect, knowing how fragile your soul had been the moment he’d met you.

“ready, sweetheart?” Red asked, looking at you with such reverence that your heart—or soul, you suppose—stuttered. You squeezed their hands back, looking between the pair of skeletons you’d fallen in love with. With a smile and a nod, crimson and blue began to bleed into the darkness of the mountain air…

Summary of the fic

Before the events in Undertale, the world was different. This is the story of the dragon Asriel who fell deeper and deeper, making stories in stories to escape an intolerant reality.
