Mikhail Kuzmin was the author of the novel Wings (Крылья, 1906), the first Russian novel to deal explicitly with the topic of homosexuality. The red cravat in Somov’s portrait of the writer communicates Kuzmin’s homosexuality through a common fin de siècle symbol.
