During the Rain - Part 2 of a Koi wa Ameagari no You ni fanfiction

“For.. Table..” Kase’s words blurred themselves as Kondou began to carefully place the plates on his circular tray. He frowned to himself, and mindlessly checked the order before holding it in his hand that was supporting the tray.

“Tachibana...” He thought to himself, as he walked out of the kitchen area, eyes relatively aimed at the floor. “Why?”

His feet and his vision found themselves at Table 5.

“Hello! Did you four order four hamburg steak sets, and later two strawberry parfaits and two iced teas for desert?” Kondou greeted the customers, putting on a quick smile. He let out a slight nervous laugh as they regarded him. It seemed like the right table. Four people, with the kids having the strawberry parfaits and the adults taking the iced teas--

“No, I’m sorry?” The father, presumably, of the four responded. “We didn’t order that..”

“Oh, we did!” The teenage group of girls said from Table 7, nearby.

“Ah! My apologies, sir.” Kondou bowed, and swiftly walked to the correct table, placing the orders in front of everybody. He was happy that they seemed to forgive his mistake, as he watched them all gaze excitedly at the food being placed in front of them. The aroma hitting his nostrils was definitely a very promising one.

“Why fall for someone like me?”

“Excuse me, waiter? Or are you the manager?” A customer called from Table 9. Oh boy, that face and voice sounded familiar to him. Attempting to hide his increasingly-apparent glum expression, he continued onward towards the male, practically forcing a smile onto his face.

“Yes, sir? Is there something wrong?” Kondou’s smile twitched, but luckily the customer was looking instead at their meal, arms folded.

“Well, it’s just that, I think there’s been…” He continued on. Kondou stared directly at the customer, but their monotone voice seemed to drift away..

“Surely Yoshizawa would have been a better fit… I’m so old, surely she could go for a more attractive guy her age...”

“The meal came out to me lukewarm and I asked for extra rice, but more needed to be made…”

“How could she feel that way about me?”

“And it’s been two minutes, and there’s no rice! What kind of establishment is this?! Rice should be available every minute! And another thing…”

“What reasons could she find to--”

“HEY?! Are you listening to me?!” The man yelled at him, upon seeing Kondou’s blank expression and lack of a response. His eyes widened as his brain finally caught up to the situation at hand, and his hands waved about for a brief second, unsure of what to do.

“Ah! I’m sorry sir, yes, I shall see to your concerns right away..” Kondou leant over to take the dish back to the kitchen.

“Like you even heard them in the first place.” The customer muttered under his breath, as Kondou took his plate. Steeling his resolve, he laughed, embarrassed, and bowed a few more times and apologised profusely before returning to the kitchen to fix the issues he… kind of heard?

“There aren’t any redeemable qualities about me.”

“Your fly’s down again!” Kubo snapped at him, and Kondou jolted, immediately looking down in a panic. His hand immediately flew to his crotch, fingertips feeling for the zipper. Again? He sworn he had--

His fly wasn’t down.

“Just keeping you alert. You’ve been acting odd since your break.” Kobu sighed. “I guess I’ll have to take care of you again,” Kubo took the plate, and Kondou regarded her with a half-sour look. “I’ll handle this customer.”

“Thanks, Kubo…” Kondou smiled slightly in relief. Internally he felt a jabbing pain in his gut.

“Good work, Manager. A great example to set for your employees.”

Letting out a heavy exhale through his nose, Kondou retired to his office to continue organising everybody’s work schedules and pay packets. The store seemed quiet enough now.

And it gave him some time to think in peace...

So I’m starting to reblog Koi wa Ameagari no You Ni (Love is like After the Rain) content

And I just wanted to put that out there in case people were uncomfortable about it, since Tumblr can be a bit of a sensitive place.

The ongoing manga (which is now starting an anime) created by Jun Mayuzuki explores the story of Akira Tachibana, a 17 yo high school student who has a massive crush on her restaurant manager boss, Kondou Masami, age 45. Things haven’t really happened so far (like any full-on kissing or real dating), because Masami is trying to resist the relationship and such in fear of legal consequences.

This story is interesting because, and forgive me for my very limited Japanese knowledge, it mainly tackles the issue of “compensated dating” and such in Japan (when an older man hires an escort like a younger woman, and even school girls, for sexual favors and such), but it’s the student chasing the older man, and not the other way around. Despite me rooting for their relationship at times, I feel like it will not end up that way. I personally think it’s going to end with the two having a close friendship, after her feelings calm down and the characters have been developed more.

I can understand that this story would be seen as "problematic" and potentially even controversial in Western culture to our black and white perception of these topics, especially with a majority of countries' age of consent being around 16-18, while Japan's is lower. It's important to experience the story and consider its context. I do not condone manipulative age-gap, employee-employer relationships, but this story has been nothing but positive and thought-provoking at times.

Overall, the anime is of a very high quality, despite it having only released its first episode last week. The manga also has a very appealing "normal" artstyle, and is not at all sexualised and does not have fanservice. I think there are a few odd parts, but I think they are potentially tongue-in-cheek for cheap anime tropes used nowadays for fanservice. It is slice of life, and it also focuses on other characters. I think each character has been getting their deserved time in the spotlight and are also developing, as well as the protagonists Masami and Tachibana.

Also I’m looking around Tumblr, seems we all agree Masami is a DILF. I’m glad he’s the main thing we’re all loving.

So,

TLDR: I'm enjoying Koi wa Ameagari no You Ni and feel free to unfollow me if it makes you feel uncomfortable. I will be sure to tag it appropriately, and since its Romanji title seems to alternate between everybody, I’ll tag them with Kwayn.
