I find that there’s too much black and white thinking going on? It goes for pretty much any fandom, but it makes it near impossible to admit that anything you like has its flaws, because if it’s not perfect then obviously it should be hated. Being critical but still positive just… isn’t allowed

maybe that’s part of the problem, but even when criticism does make it into the mainstream (see: mineta from bnha, the death of sloane & hurley from taz) people tend to be... selective about how much they’re willing to accept it, and how deeply they’ll admit it runs (see: lots of complaints about removing mineta, much less talk about generalised misogyny and sexualisation of children in bnha; people agreeing that the only lesbians on the cast shouldn’t have been killed off, but being somewhat slower to point out the... unfortunate slavery apologism in taz).

there’s an element of black-and-white thinking, but i feel most of that comes from the white side—the idea that nothing i really like could possibly be that bad, so bad that not everyone is interested in just briefly acknowledging the problem and then moving on, so bad that its whole narrative is injured by an element of it that i didn’t personally notice because it doesn’t really affect me.

“surely a bit of whitewashing is just par for the course! all the really bad, genuinely racist & misogynistic stuff is over in the other corner where i can’t see it. you’re just splitting hairs. sure, they’re a stereotype, but they’re a recurring character! look, sometimes, in a fantasy world, imperialism is good. my fave character may be really into eugenics but he’s hot, so... anyway, if you’re such an activist, don’t you have bigger things to be worrying about?”

on and on, until it’s pretty much obvious that bigotry doesn’t really matter as much to some people as the freedom to have fun without being bothered.

which like, isn’t to say that you can’t have fun and tell stories in a critical, transformative way. just that... people don’t want to do that, either. and the alienation of being demonised in media i’m supposed to be able to enjoy is frankly quite minor compared to the far stronger and more personal alienation of no one else in a supposedly fun, friendly environment caring enough to understand what’s happening.
