Steeped in detuned guitars and iridescent noise, Drowse sounds like an intimate Mount Eerie home recording overdubbed with a worn-out cassette of The Cure's Disintegration.
One-man bands tend to be quite heavily lonesome affairs thanks to them putting one musician through the wringer with some reaching the breakdown like one we discussed before, i.e. Planning For The Burial. Drowse might be another one of this mood. I mean, the whole thing does have Planning For Burial's eeriness, though the latter seems to be presented differently. His scariness does resemble a suspense of the musician in our previous post, yet he appears to be more out there than Planning For Burial. Drowse by Kyle Bates challenges the sky, whereas Planning For Burial stays on the ground. They both evoke a certain amount of horror, though the quality of Drowse hews close to existential. Actually, Drowse is more of a Lovecraft, if you catch my drift.

In theory, I like the idea of learning songs to play. In practice, my attention span never allows for that to actually happen. I’d just rather mess around and write my own music than play the music of others. However, sometime last winter, I reached out to @drowseportland and asked him for tabs for this song, as I couldn’t find any online. I kind of thought he wasn’t actually going to respond to me, nor would he hook me up with tabs, and I was definitely wrong. Kyle did in fact respond, he did hook me up with tabs, and Break, along with Spectral Bride by Giles Corey, are the only two songs I’ve ever really given my full attention to learn how to play. I love listening to this song, and I love playing along to it even more.
A collection of songs representing the shifting sounds of the music I make as drowse and in Floating Room. A brief stylistic overview.
