The famous Japanese manga artist Mizuki Shigeru is one of the creators influenced by Gogol's short novel Viy and it's movie adaptation,he created a short horror manga "Dead Man's Possession"(死人つき) adapted from it in 1964,and that manga was further adapted into the two episodes of Gegege no Kitaro anime season 2 and 5.Dead Man's Possession describes a monk's experience during a vigil in a temple,the overall story is almost the same as the original:During three nights a dead women will come back to life and attack the monk along with other monsters,while he surrounds himself with a magic circle on the ground until the rooster crows that turns the women back into corpses.

Viy,the most important monster in the original,was replaced with an approximation of Japan yokai appearance in Mizuki's works.It has a single eye with thick eyelid which looks a bit like the yokai Hitotsume-kozo(一つ目小僧).Another difference from the original work is that the resurrected woman is not a witch,but is possessed by a yokai called Moryo(魍魎).It's a collective term for spirits and yokai,but also refers to a yokai that steals and eats the internal organs of human corpses like Kasha(火車)(Therefore there's an opinion that both have a evolutionary relationship in the culture),maybe that's why Mizuki chose to replace the plot of "woman resurrected for revenge as a witch" with possession by Moryo.

The episodes adapted from 死人つき in Gegege no Kitaro season 2 and 5.

The famous mystery novelist Kyogoku Natsuhiko also wrote a novel with the theme of Moryo,Moryo no Hako.This story explores the boundaries between life and death in a disturbing way,and the possibility of human beings entering "the other world".Moryo isn't an entity,but a cultural concept proposed by the protagonist Kyogokudo to symbolize a specific phenomenon or psychological state,and the object it "possesses" is not dead bodies but minds of living people.Gegege no Kitaro s6e78 is also used Moryo as the monster of the week,in addition to elements from Dead Man's Possession,it's not difficult to find that a certain character's experience and relationship with the dead were inspired by that novel.

Japanese novelist Kyogoku Natsuhiko is a fan and disciple of Shigeru Mizuki,the author of the manga "Gegege no Kitaro".He wrote the script for Gegege no Kitaro anime s04 ep101,and provided design and voice acting for the character Ikkokudo,an onmyoji who exorcises yokai through Kotodama(word spirit).His appearance,demeanor,and unhappy expression are clearly similar to Chuzeji Akihiko aka Kyogokudo from Kyogoku's novels,but he is able to destroy real yokai.He can influence yokais' cognitive for themselves through language and restore them to "natural" objects by that.Kyogoku actually taught the audience a simple lesson on yokai culture through this character.
