english language bootcamp, with @lgckyoka

english was tough. it wasn't something junkyu had really tried to practice much before in the past, though now as a trainee, he knew that knowing a decent amount of english could come in handy in the future. so these last few weeks, he had been watching gossip girl each week for at least an hour, without subtitles. and it was safe to say he was pretty confused.

though as the weeks went past, things were starting to make a bit more sense. it wasn't like he was a fluent speaker, but he was starting to understand the basic phrases and how to form introductory sentences. so knowing kyoka was willing to help him out, honestly meant a lot.

"hello, my name is choi junkyu, it-" he pauses himself, thinking about the correct wording. he's aware there's a coach watching over them, and even that just adds a tiny bit more pressure. "it's.." he glances up at kyoko, hoping for a little bit of reassurance that he was doing well as he continues. "nice to meet you. i am.. twenty-five years old.."

i originally had kyoka locked up after accidentally killing a girl who was bullying her ( it was self defense tbh cause homegirl was literally beating kyoka's ass ) but like what if what IFFFF a villain saw everything and that the hero who found kyoka was just gonna arrest them & not listen to anything they were saying so they unalive said hero and take her in? like eventually she'd find her way to the league or mla and be the ears of the operation, ya feel? like imagine all the ambushes that could have been avoided bc kyoka out here like "uhhh i just heard a barrage of ppl we gotta GO"

the last time junkyu found himself in this sort of position was a month or two ago, when kyoka had offered to help junkyu with his english bootcamp training. he was extremely appreciative, especially because back then, his english was still lacking in many ways. while he wasn't terrible at english then, he was good enough to communicate decently enough, even if it took him a few moments to think of the right word and pronunciation.

and now, they find themselves in one of the practice rooms in a similar situation, though this time it's more focused on the hosting workshops than english. but, to make things more fun, the two of them decided to blend it with some english. kill two birds with one stone, right?

for someone who's more used to being in front of a camera now, holding one wasn't as easy as junkyu thought. "when you film your vlog, how are you going to hold the camera?" junkyu asks curiously, fiddling around with the camera in his hands, moving it from one place on the table close by to in his hands and at a distance to film himself.

the significant novelty of kyoka‘s first full length album »is (Is Superpowered)« is that she uses her own voice much more often than usual, in the form of short snippets as well as longer sung melodies. these elements are set and arranged as if they were an autonomous instrument, and sometimes they give the impression of being a babelesque language mix-up, or even a kind of cryptic message for the listener like found in the song »meander«. the production process of the record was heavily supported by her label mates frank bretscheider and robert lippok, which is, in this way of forming a production team, a unique constellation in the history of raster-noton. whereas lippok focused on preserving the roughness and complexity of kyoka‘s compositions, bretschneider concentrated on refining them regarding their fluidity and focus. both tried to keep the vitality and hyperactivity of the initial tracks without losing their distinctive eccentricity. although kyoka‘s sound is often kind of chaotic, it is by no means stressful but rather energizing and easy to enjoy. the only exception to this can be found in »piezo version vision«, the noticeably roughest track of the record. her particularly progressive style is best reflected by the song »re-pulsion«, a rolling groove combined with unusual clicks and snares and topped with crazy sounding voice fragments. the album thus further deepens what was already initiated with her first ep »iSH«, released as part five of raster-noton‘s unun series. it presents a stylistically broader spectrum of kyoka‘s music but at the same time exhibits the fresh and positive, sometimes even childlike attitude she is already known for. this eventually renders »is (Is Superpowered)« a perfect extension of our label catalogue.
