THE ROOTS OF SUBTROPICAL MUSIC: Cumbia, Guaracha, Merengue, Porro & Plena Dura! Uruguay 1975-1980 Sonido Cotopaxi - Melisa Grupo Keguay - cerca del palmar Las Estrellas de Macondo : Si fueras tú * Tropicana 70 - plena sensacional Conjunto Casino - que golazo! ^^ Sonora Borinquen - el disco rayao Grupo Manatí - El porro Combo Camaguey - Tío Caimán Sonora Cienfuegos - pies mojados Las Estrellas de Macondo - María Mercedes ** Grupo Manatí – Jala Jala en Panamá (outro) *canta Carlos Goberna **canta Macumba ^^canta Chico Ferry selección y mixtape de Selectorchico™ tipografía : Gastón Castagnet - KLTR diseño gráfico : Nandy Cabrera This is a re-edition of selected works crafted during the seventies by uruguay's based label Macondo. The artists tried to emulate the tropical music styles that were popular at the time in Caribbean countries such as Puerto Rico, Panamá (Plena, Merengue) and Colombia (Porro, Bomba and of course Cumbia) but it came out raw and a little off, defining a unique genre which we could now retrospectively call Plena Dura. These different rhythms and styles are sometimes blended and mixed with afro-uruguayan candombe traditional drums in a particular and original style with a unique, almost garage electric feel, full of sizzling hi-hats. The harmonies are sometimes led by farfisa organ and fuzz guitar, counterpointed with blaring brass sections with swinging trumpets (arranged by producer and trumpet player himself Mario Maldonado) while sometimes spacey murga choirs appear in and out of the mix. Outstanding vocalists are surely Carlos Goberna (from Sonora Borinquen, still in activity today) and Macumba and his crooning antics featured in Grupo Manatí. All the material was taken from used vinyl, and is very little-known outside Uruguay. All of it was bought digging in second-hand thrift since no master-tapes are apparently available and this music was never re-issued digitally until now.

Wganda Kenya - Shakalaode (Audio) From the Strut album Club Africa, Vol. 1 Hard African Funk, Afro-Jazz, & Original Afro-Beat. Crazy Columbian afro-beat from Wganda Kenya! Paying homage to Fela Kuti's classic track, Shakara Oloje, Wganda Kenya were Discos Fuentes' (the pioneering Colombian label of the 60's & 70's) studio band and were hired to record non-latin records that encompassed influences from Africa, Martinque and Curacoa. Released in 1976, 'Shakalaode' is an undeniably infectious and joyous track. Effortlessly funky, the horns are seamlessly woven into the rhythmic bassline, resulting in seven minutes of hypnotic afro-beat. Fela himself is rocking in his grave as we speak! Another colombian version of Fela (who would be 76 years old since yesterday) HERE. Thanks to Jaime Andres Monsalvo for the link.

Slimkid3 & DJ Nu-mark NEW LP The full-length collaboration of Slimkid3 (formerly of The Pharcyde) and Jurassic 5's DJ Nu-Mark is available now.
Living fields, Portico Newly re-configured as a three piece, Portico (Duncan Bellamy, Milo Fitzpatrick and Jack Wyllie) are delighted to unveil a brand new song from their forthcoming album. Bordering on the hallucinatory, their hypnotic music moves forwards towards distant places, arriving somewhere between structured pop songs and a disintegrating ambience. “Living Fields” featuring vocals by Jono McCleery is the perfect introduction. The band is also thrilled to announce that they’ve signed to Ninja Tune. Currently in the studio putting the finishing touches to the full length, with collaborators Jamie Woon, Jono McCleery and Joe Newman (Alt-J). Portico are on tour this autumn, and their new album will be released in March 2015, check http://porticomusic.co.uk for more info.
