It finally happened.
A scheduled holiday, and a paper with a bold green 'APPROVED' had finally landed in the middle of Cappuccino Cookie's desk like a holy grail amidst towering files, where the slightest stagger would definitely topple others like a domino. This would mark his first vacation for this year; he would have wept in joy right now until he skimmed through the contents of the paper and visibly deflated.
"Just one day off on a one-week holiday? Ah, whatever…" Cappuccino Cookie brought a hand down his face, just slightly irked about it but it is what it is. He finally flipped the paper over when he read through a case trial to be held tomorrow. He just hoped it's a pleasant one and not anything too horrible. The stack of cappuccino cups were going to become a staple landmark in the department soon if all nighter cases kept coming in.
At the very least, this cafe he had chosen had the much needed relaxing atmosphere he was looking for. Warm motes of sunlight through french door windows, painting the inside of the cafe in yellow oranges and a few customers quietly chattering and minding their own business in a cozy ambience. Cappuccino Cookie opted for a spot near the corner and by the window, papers strewn around, a laptop, and a perfect cup of frothy cappuccino with a slightly messed up heart art. Since this technically felt more like a working day off—if that even made sense—Cappuccino Cookie opted to save himself some time to sleep later by working on it early.
"—That mock trial didn't even make sense, your refutes were all in the wrong places!" One cookie slammed their hands on the table across Cappuccino Cookie's spot with fervor. Not enough to cause a ruckus but enough to turn heads briefly. "Er, I guess that's why you failed the exam, Lavender… those were first year lessons from the first law book we studied too." Another answered sheepishly, looking abashed.
Cappuccino Cookie did feel more distracted than usual though since he isn't in his usual environment to be working on. His eyes glanced at the group of noisy cookies with familiar uniforms. 'Judicial Training Academy' his mind immediately supplied as he shifted slightly on his seat, a little curious to hear. He's heard stellar remarks on the recent batch of that academy, and even he himself witnessed it from a bright fellow lawyer. Cappuccino Cookie leaned back, crossing his arms thoughtfully. "Now that I think about it, it has been a while since I heard anything from Langue de Chat Cookie…" He mumbled to himself, his gaze returning to the paper he was holding aloft.
As if some force answered his thoughts, the bell by the entrance softly chimed as a customer entered. Cappuccino Cookie didn't pay heed to it, a little absentminded as he listened in on the 'failed mock trial' and was actively figuring out what the student had said wrong until a shade of red-orange appeared in his periphery, slightly jumping when his gaze met with green eyes and cream colored hair before easing up at the familiar figure. "Huh. Didn't think I would summon you." Cappuccino Cookie lightly gave him a small smile.
Langue de Chat Cookie was just as surprised, blinking twice before turning his head towards the papers, respectfully nodding in greeting. "Prosecutor." He starts, though Cappuccino Cookie interjected with a dismissive wave. "Cappuccino is fine, Langue. I didn't expect to come across a legal fellow today."
Langue de Chat Cookie pushed his glasses up a bit and quietly huffed. " The same goes to you, Cappuccino. You hardly ever step out of the office or the court room. I was surprised to see a different prosecutor take your place." Langue de Chat Cookie awkwardly stood at the side of the table for a bit as he watched Cappuccino Cookie sort his papers before finally sitting when the former gestured lazily for him to seat.
"… The trial wasn't difficult—but it was a heavy topic. Not like the phantom bleu case from before." Langue de Chat Cookie starts, a conflicted expression crossing his face. He had taken the case up to boost his name but he didn't expect the one he was defending to have gone through so much sensitive things, one he couldn't share too much out of respect. Cappuccino Cookie stopped mid-sip, regarding Langue de Chat Cookie for a bit before placing the cup down back to its saucer. As a prosecutor for years now, he understood what Langue de Chat Cookie was going through. He had noted the slightly distant look he once had when he was in his early years in the industry.
"I see. It's alright, I don't mind the company. To answer your question, I scored a day off, although for the price of a heavy work load tomorrow." Cappuccino Cookie sighed, filing through a stack of papers before setting it aside and slightly lowering his laptop screen. "Don't think about it too much. what matters is that you defended well and won your side. Your client is safe and appreciates the work you've done. It might as well be life-changing to them." He added, more softer now. He's had experience of his share of clients expressing heart felt gratitude and until now, would come and drop him gifts. It was moments like those that made Cappuccino Cookie remind him of his passion for this job, bringing justice to serve and help cookies who are in need.
Langue de Chat Cookie looked up from his Caramel Macchiato that had just been served, all the while listening intently to Cappuccino Cookie's words. He was quiet for a bit, the papers and the background chatter of the cafe setting a peaceful silence before he straightened up, averting his gaze here and there when Cappuccino Cookie raised a brow. He just realized he was staring, not that he meant to!
"I.. yes, I understand. I'm aware that I should expect this in this line of job but still, thank you." Langue de Chat Cookie coughed, a bit bashful now. What a way to make proper impressions. Cappuccino Cookie only gave him an amused smile, which, made Langue de Chat Cookie felt like he fumbled more. He wasn't supposed to act like this right now!
"So then, you came to get coffee.. here? this doesn't feel like the type of cafe you would go for." Cappuccino Cookie added, now more light and teasing as he returned all the filed papers into a case and secured his laptop inside. It felt rude to continue working when he was quaintly conversing with the bright cookie he had been thinking about.
Langue de Chat Cookie froze up, caught red handed. None of the menu even garnered his attention, he simply just went straight to Cappuccino Cookie's table before ordering. "Well.." Langue de Chat stammered, a light flush on his cheeks. He wouldn't admit it, but he did go looking for the prosecutor that always had him cornered and pressured when it comes to any kind of arguments and made him want to strive to be even better. That, or he just enjoyed the sound of his voice.
Cappuccino Cookie snorted, "Relax. We're not in a court room, I'm just pulling your leg." Although, when Langue de Chat Cookie couldn't reply, noticing his furrowed eyebrows, the light dust and his gaze that won't meet with his—Cappuccino Cookie blinked. "Oh, you did look for me." It was a statement, amused. Langue de Chat Cookie lets out a long sigh. Maybe he should just get to the family dinner already rather than combust out of embarrassment here.
"I was looking because—" Langue de Chat Cookie starts, still determined to turn things to his favor but the words died on his throat as Cappuccino Cookie hummed knowingly, holding his chin in a thoughtful manner. Langue de Chat Cookie gave up as he turned his embarrassment towards the caramel machiatto and drank it to cool down.
"Hm, you really took the advantage huh. You're quite bold." Cappuccino Cookie smirked, the tension now lighter. He supposed when he's getting his actual vacation, he can finally use his vacation shirt and bring someone with him. He enjoyed Langue de Chat Cookie's company, even after the court room trials.
Cappuccino Cookie propped an elbow on the table, resting his cheek on his palm as he gave the flustered cookie across from him a smile. "No worries, I enjoyed the abrupt cafe date. Got any places to be after this?"
Langue de Chat Cookie pushed his glasses up once again, the flush on his cheeks never going away as he straightened up. An astute lawyer like himself wasn't one to back down. "May I invite you to the family dinner?"
The group of students from Judicial Training Academy—having watched the whole interaction happen—all gathered up excitedly in one seat from across their table with wide eyes. "Wow, that's the first time I saw senior Langue de Chat Cookie turn so red with prosecutor Cappuccino Cookie."
Safe to say, the prosecutor and the defense attorney were the new talk of the department now.
