Today was Tooru’s last day of being single. He had decided at midnight when Iwaizumi had called him to say happy birthday, and promptly made his declaration.

“Iwa-chan, I’m gonna do it,” he said. “Today. Today’s the day to change the world.”

“You’ve been saying that for two years now,” Iwaizumi yawned. Tooru thought about feeling bad for keeping him up when he had class in the morning, but really Iwaizumi had been the one to call him, so it was his own damn fault.

“No, I mean it,” Tooru said. “Today’s the day. I’m going to ask Kyoutani out today. When I see him for our class, I’m gonna march right up to him and say- and say-”

“And say what?” Iwaizumi asked, his voice telling Tooru he was doing that scrunchy-nose thing he did when he was amused.

“And say ‘Hey, Kyou-chan, I’ve been in love with you for two years and I want you to take me on a date’. That should thoroughly sweep him off his feet and then it’ll be his turn to make the next move.” Tooru nodded to himself though he knew Iwaizumi couldn’t see it. Iwaizumi yawned and Tooru smiled. “Get some sleep, Iwa-chan. I’ll talk to you later, okay?”

“Okay. Happy birthday, Tooru,” Iwaizumi said, and then the line went dead. Tooru smiled at his phone then tucked it into his pocket and went back to his homework.

In class that day, Tooru sat stock-still and took no notes whatsoever. His entire being was on fire, tingling with awkwardness and excitement. Kyoutani kept glancing at him out of the corner of his eye, nudging him with his knee and nodding toward the board, but Tooru couldn’t bring himself to pay attention. Not when every glance, every touch, every second spent in Kyoutani’s presence was making Tooru want to sing. Class ended and Tooru saw his chance as their classmates began filing out.

“Hey, Kyou-chan,” Tooru started, turning to look at him, but he was gone. Tooru looked around wildly to find him hustling out of the room. Tooru sat, shell-shocked and vaguely offended. He pulled out his phone.

ME: [IWA-CHAN HE RAN AWAY BEFORE I COULD SAY ANYTHING ( ≧Д≦)]

IWA-CHAN: [Did ur face scare him off]

ME: [IWA-CHAN THIS IS NO TIME FOR JOKING]

ME: [I didn’t even get the chance to say a word to him, he just left (｡•́︿•̀｡)]

IWA-CHAN: [Maybe theres a reason]

Tooru stared at his phone, eyes squinted in suspicion.

ME: [Iwa-chan what do you know]

Iwaizumi never answered. Tooru huffed and shoved his phone back into his bag along with the rest of his school things. He slung the bag over his shoulder and stormed off.

He spent the rest of the day fuming. For Kyoutani to ignore him like that was not… unusual, per se, but Tooru hadn’t expected him to just walk off and ruin all of his plans like that. And he hadn’t even said happy birthday! Tooru was furious, to say the least. So furious that he almost didn’t notice Kyoutani standing outside his apartment door when he got home late that evening.

“What do you want, Kyou-chan?” he asked, not bothering to keep the rudeness out of his voice.

“Get changed,” Kyoutani said gruffly. “Wear something nice, not that shit you normally wear.”

“Excuse me?” Tooru shrilled, looking down at his clothes and back up at Kyoutani.

“Oh, and wear shoes you can walk in,” Kyoutani added, taking Tooru’s keys out of his hand and letting himself in. He crossed to the kitchen and started rummaging around in the fridge like he owned the place.

Tooru had two options. He could be obnoxious and demand to know just who Kyoutani thought he was, or he could play his little game. For once in his life, the latter option seemed more appealing to Tooru. He sighed heavily through his nose to let Kyoutani know that he was displeased, then tromped off to the bedroom to get changed.

When he emerged, Kyoutani was standing in the genkan, his shoes already tied. Tooru grumbled something unintelligible under his breath as he bent down to put his own shoes on. Kyoutani gave him a smirk for that, which Tooru counted as a win.

“Where are we going?” Tooru asked.

“You’ll see,” Kyoutani said, and grabbed him by the arm to drag him out of the apartment. He barely let Tooru lock up behind them before he was dragging him once again.

It was two and a half stops on the train before Tooru realized where they were going.

“No,” Tooru gasped, then said more clearly, “No.”

“No, what?” Kyoutani asked.

“It’s too expensive. You’re just as broke as I am.” The observatory charged outrageous fees, the only reason Tooru wasn’t there every single night.

“Maybe I know a guy,” Kyoutani said.

“Maybe, but you don’t,” Tooru argued. “I can’t accept this. It’s too much. You have to at least let me pay you back.”

“You’re just as broke as I am,” Kyoutani mimicked. Tooru narrowed his eyes at him.

“Don’t you sass me on my birthday,” Tooru said.

“Don’t be an ass and I won’t sass you.”

“You little-” Kyoutani rolled his eyes and leaned up to kiss Tooru. He slipped his tongue into Tooru’s open mouth and flicked it at the backs of his teeth. Then he pulled away to glare at Tooru.

“You talk too much,” he said. Tooru felt his entire face turn red.

“NO FAIR!” he wailed. “I was supposed to sweep you off your feet, not the other way around!”

“Like you could ever,” Kyoutani said with a gruff little laugh that made Tooru’s limbs turn to jelly. “Now come on,” Kyoutani said, standing up. “We’re walking through the park on our way there.”

“How romantic,” Tooru teased, standing and wrapping his arm around Kyoutani’s. “I have a feeling this is gonna be the start of something great, Kyou-chan.”

“Don’t call me that,” Kyoutani said, but he was smiling. The train came to a stop and they stepped out into the night.
