Tony had never met another dragon. This was a fact, an unfortunate one, but given the various catastrophes, not at all shocking. After all, his family had stopped manifesting their dragon heritage generations ago, and this was the prevailing situation for most of the world, and he knew it. 

Thus, he never thought to look for any others, not really, not once he had himself sorted out. It meant that he didn’t know what someone who was raised in that society would be like, if it would be different at all, with how distant it would have been since that sort of thing. 

It meant that at this gala he was only expecting to deal with other humans and nothing else, and when he headed off to the sidelines for the night to make his way out, he most certainly didn’t expect to be followed. Though, really, he should have expected it. Such was his life, really.

He managed to smile at Foster’s apology.  “It’s...it’s alright.  I’m not around much either.  I work odd hours too.”  James shrugged, though he had to duck his head to hide his watery smile.  Fuck, he hated when he couldn’t hold back his tears.

The outstretched hand took him by surprise.  James hadn’t been expecting that and, well, was he supposed to take it?  Did he want to?

He did.  He took his neighbor’s hand and squeezed it, careful to not hurt him, but also so incredibly relieved by the kind gesture.  

“Fuck.  I’m sorry,” he wheezed as his shoulders crumpled and James started to fall again.  “I...I doubt you came over here to watch a grown man cry.”

"When did you go into heat?" Foster asked, a slight panic in his voice as he looked down at the other.

“This mornin’ I think, everything is sort of a blur at the moment.” He murmured, shifting uncomfortably on the couch. “Look, it’ll be fine. I can handle it.”
