Finally free from his cage Kyrian quickly found a half way secure place where he could rest. And he certainly needed to. Being frozen in time was never fun but being frozen with part of the time vortex inside of you, that was just torture. Also the hole that Caliban’s absence had left in his hearts and soul slowly ate away on his sanity. 

Kyrian found rest in one of the many caves in the desert. He didn’t look good, was thirsty, hungry and really needed new clothes. But finding Caliban was more important than that.

He found his way into XI’s mind as easily as always. Maybe even easier. He wasn’t sure why but it was quiet there, calm and peaceful. Balm to Kyrian’s own raging mind. He found himself on a beach close to a tiny house. Well, this was interesting. Gently he knocked on the door. “Beloved?”

This was wrong. No one ever came from that door. For whatever reason XI could not place, in his heart of hearts he knew that no one could come from there. In his tentative recovery and blissfully ignorant mind, the Doctor lacked the understanding of why the beach simultaneously called to him as well as discouraged him from touching the handle. Always he would turn away and murmur to himself, utterances such as “I’m not ready yet. The weather’s not right.” Sometimes the floor reached out with clawed, abyssal hands and gripped his legs, dragging him back to show him something he had forgotten. Other times friends came to call, suddenly in the room as if they had always been there - or maybe he let them in a moment ago?

But nothing ever came from there.

As placid and free of his worries as XI’s mind was, he knew that voice. It might have had the timbre of his lover’s, but the accent was not the same and nor would X have ever used that word in such context. He backed against the far wall, petrified that he was alone with this man at his door. You can’t be here. I buried you. 

Dark talons oozed from the nonsensical carpet and dug into his boots. He closed his eyes, not engaging with them. This was just another figment he was not ready to deal with and surely it would go away. XI held his breath.

Surveillance had been somewhat lax of late on Gallifrey. Well, it couldn’t be helped. The Chancellery were only so many and they were spread thin catering to the many whims of their ruler-turned-megalomaniac. Missy’s prime concern - the Time Lord, X - had become occupied with this, not getting enough sleep, and the added relationship strain caused by his younger self’s presence. Who could blame anyone on the planet for failing to account for her movements at any given moment? It wasn’t as if she had carefully mapped out all these little niggles, ever since before XI had even been brought home, now was it?

Even before Missy had claimed the Dark Matrix for herself, her pieces had moved. There was Clara; Megan; the purposely ineffectual coup; Theta - oh, she was going to try to take credit for that one. Sure, why not? XI “accidentally” ended up in that particular place right at that particular moment wee young X happened to be there. Of course, a coincidence. 

Here, however, was a piece to rival the once-mistake of Kronos. Fool that the Lord President was for burying the greatest threat to Gallifrey, to all of the universes - save himself - and not keeping some manner of observation on it. Not that XI was to blame, poor possessed creature that he had been.

Missy splayed metal-clad fingers upon the glass behind which was preserved the still form of Kyrian. At last powerful enough to take the risk, she could play games. It had been easy to acquire the protective armour, courtesy of her dear Doctor’s generosity with his guards, whilst Rassilon’s Gauntlet and the discovery of the Dark Matrix had taken luck and strategy. Eager to begin, she focused upon the particles keeping Kyrian in stasis and commanded them with the gauntlet. Their nanodata corrupted, the message passing on, until the substance converted itself into a harmless vapour, releasing its hold upon the prisoner.

It wasn’t going to be a pleasant wake-up call. Regardless of anything else Kyrian would be feeling, Caliban’s severed bond was going to hurt.

“Rise and shine, my dear,” Missy sang, “ although I suppose with you it’s more rise and burn.”

Nightmare

“A-Amy, stop. Whatever it is, tell me what’s happened.”

Her cold stare managed to portray itself as both dead and terribly fragile at the same time, her hand trembling only a fraction as it held the gun to his temple. “You promised me, Doctor. You said she’d be safe. We did what you asked and it wasn’t enough.” Amy’s voice cracked with more grief than he had ever heard from her before. “She is everything I have. You gave her to me and now sh- my daugh’er - will be taken from me unless I do this.”

XI looked at her in panicked bewilderment. “Unless you do what? Amelia -.”

“Shut up!” she snapped. “Shut up and get in the house, now!”

He could have grabbed for the gun, but whether it was the curse of the dream or his senses telling him that trying to fight a woman protecting her child - his child - was futile, he trudged on into the open doorway of her home.

There, sat in an armchair (of course an armchair) in Amy’s living room, was a man so common in his nightmares. What was worse, however, was that his six-year-old daughter was perched upon Kyrian’s knee. She did not seem too perturbed, a thumb stuck in her mouth, her other hand twirling the end of one of her bunches. The look on the Doctor’s face must have been something priceless. Amy slipped in behind him and nudged the barrel of the gun against his back, out of Gwen’s notice. Clearly she did not want to upset their child.

“Hello, Daddy,” Gwen mumbled around her thumb and waved the fingers of the same hand.

“Here he is,” Amy said sharply, “just like y’ asked. Now why don’t you boys hurry along? Gwen an’ I were going out for ice cream.”

The thumb came out. “Ice cream, yaaaaaay!” Gwen’s legs kicked excitedly, oblivious to the heels of her little shoes that were digging into the shins of XI’s most dangerous enemy,

Kyrian seemed unperturbed, sliding his arms around Gwen where she sat. “What a lovely idea. I think we should all have ice cream, don’t you, Doctor?”

“Put her down, please,” XI said quietly, beyond terrified.

“Oh, she’s fine. Such a precocious little girl you have. Shame she’s half-human, but she’s still brimming with life and energy.”

“If you touch her -.”

“I already am, but if you mean what I think you do then, no, of course not. Because you’re going to come back to my ship and stay as my guest until I can convince you that I’m not the monster which you so often believe.”

XI clenched his jaw. “You will never convince me.”

Kyrian shrugged. “Then you will be staying with me for a very long time, it seems. I’ll make sure Gwen gets plenty of ice cream while her Daddy is away. Amelia, would you be so kind as to put the Doctor to sleep? We can’t let him cheat with all his protective measures and, after all, he must be very tired.” His hands crept playfully around Gwen’s eyes, blocking the vision of her mother smacking XI around the back of the head with the gun.

After blacking out, the helpless Time Lord woke and once again clung with relief to the form of his lover in the bed, though he had been cautious to doubly check that this man was truly who he wanted. 

Oh, thank god.

For a long time XI stared at the message that had arrived on his psychic paper. He had thought that his own greater power would keep those old gnawing memories at bay but that had been proven wrong all too recently in an acquaintance’s cathouse and now, brought to the surface, he tried to drown them in bourbon. For the present, however, there was nothing yet to fear. Despite the fiasco at the trial, his greatest enemy had so far been true to his word. Kyrian had not interfered, nor had he harmed anyone since his promise.

Remaining in the privacy of his exceptionally secure room - he’d already been assassinated once - XI finished off his glass and then picked up his psychic paper in order to project a reply:
