matt - OH MAN THIS IS HARD. I’m tempted to say gryffindor because his end goal is obviously defending the weak, but also he has no compunction about running around beating people up PLUS he doesn’t care so much about the means rather than the ends. but would a slytherin quit a fancy law firm job in favour of being broke and working pro bono? POSSIBLY if their ambition is “protect hell’s kitchen” rather than “make assloads of money.” I’m calling this one for slytherin.

foggy - hufflepuff. bless his heart, he thinks he’s a slytherin. Matt and Foggy’s whole thing is basically that Foggy thinks he’s a slytherin protecting hufflepuff Matt when really it’s the other way around.

i mentioned martyrs in my tags already, but also: INSIDE OH GOD. MAY I NEVER EVER BE PUT IN THE POSITION TO WATCH INSIDE. WHY IS FRENCH HORROR THE WAY IT IS. (also i know i'm never gonna be able to touch the saw franchise???? torture movies in general freak me out really hard -- not media where there might be a scene of it, but movies where it's the POINT. AGH. also gross-out shock horror like those centipede movies but that's low-hanging fruit.)

I don’t know what is wrong (or right?) with French filmmakers but every description of a French horror movie I’ve ever read makes me want to crawl under my bed and never emerge. Martyrs? NOPE. Irreversible? NOPE. Inside? OH HELL NO. Sorry France, but your movies wig me out.

(I feel the same way about Saw, which makes me kind of sad, because I do really like James Wan. But torture horror is too echhh for me.)

for the meme: any thoughts on angharad&cheedo?

OKAY SO what with how “fragile” Cheedo is at the beginning of the movie, you’d think she would gravitate to someone like Capable, who is much more about holding back and risk prevention than the others OR she’d just stick with the Dag all the time. BUT NO, she looks to Angharad when she’s faced with making a decision. Which makes me think that Angharad is her guiding light when it comes to deciding what is and isn’t okay- she looks to the others for comfort and friendship, but she looks to Angharad for leadership. If Angharad says they’re going to the Green Place, that means they can do it, right?

so of course she tries to run back when it all goes pear-shaped: she only believed in the Green Place because Angharad believed so much. With Angharad gone, there’s nothing left for her to keep faith in. The Dag wants to get away, but she’s more of a rager than a planner. Capable takes care of them, but she’s not their leader; that was Angharad’s job. Toast isn’t close enough to any of them to inspire or lead, and Furiosa is too remote. She didn’t believe in the Green Place, she believed in Angharad, and now Angharad’s gone.

my friend and i are intently analyzing and discussing why laura was comfortable with having "killed" the dean but is so traumatized over taking out vordie. we have a few different interpretations (and of course the contexts are very different) but i was wondering if you might be able to shed some light on the contrast in her responses? also, thanks for such an emotionally complex and wonderfully written season. <3

Sure!

Laura sees the world in stark blacks and whites at the beginning of the series. She sees the Dean as Evil, no matter what. It isn’t until afterwards, when she starts to see the toll that the Dean’s death has had on Carmilla and the power vacuum it created, that she starts to appreciate the gray. 

The Dean died in a very abstract sort of way. She fell into a pit with the fish. It’s easy to just brush it off as a tragic accident and to not really assign a lot of self-blame to what happened. 

With Vordenberg, Laura does not have that ability to shuffle blame onto happenstance and compartmentalize away the death as not really her fault. She has to make the choice to take his life to save Carmilla knowing that the only way to do that is to effectively end Vordenberg’s life. Sure, he might have been making a play at a small dictatorship, but that does not mean he deserved to die. Laura knows this. She knows this and she’s seen it in action (with Danny and with Mattie) and she does it anyway.

Laura falls apart in the finale because of this. because she knows that she made a choice to save Carmilla over her own moral innocence. She’s putting on a brave face now, because let’s be real, the girl has always been really good at compartmentalizing and putting on a brave face. Still, it’s obviously on her mind.

So hey. I’ve never streamed ANYTHING before, but my dear love @kyrigiris wants to see Until Dawn, has no PS4, and is not my level of WTF to spend $400+ on a console and game.

So, as a good friend does when they suck their beloved former college roommate into a fandom she can’t enter into via osmosis, I’m streaming it for her, since I’m hesitant to point her to a let’s play as the game is SO varied on choices.

I’m doing more streaming later tonight over at my Twitch channel, but I’m not talking, it’s just gameplay. If anyone would just like to watch an Until Dawn stream, go ahead! I got through chapter 1 and part of chapter 2 before the internet blipped, but I’ll pick up from where I left off and the first part of the stream is archived for a week. ...Hopefully gonna get it all up on Youtube once it’s processed, the like.
