Dad stories I am not allowed to tell at the memorial because it would scandalize my great-aunts, even though they are a very accurate representation of his personality:
when we went to NYC for the first time when I was sixteen, I had tickets to see Spring Awakening on Broadway, and of course my mother insisted that I could NOT go by myself. So I opted to take Dad because I knew he was less likely to freak out about the content. To his credit, he did not (although he did complain, "I feel like a pervert watching this") but later on when he relayed the story to Mom, he kept repeating, "and they were FUCKING ONSTAGE."
at one point, his mom called, and he said, "oh yeah, I was just thinking of you! I was watching Psycho!" and he did not get why she was offended by this.
we hosted the family Christmas party a couple years ago, and the night before, my mom was frantic because we'd just gotten word that an additional five people would be coming and we didn't have enough food. Dad, who never met a room he couldn't misread, chose that moment to turn to me and say, "so where did you go to get your tattoo done?" This was the first my mother had heard about said tattoo. I'll say this, it took her mind right off the party.
he was a big-time Game of Thrones fan, and specifically a Sansa stan, because - and I quote - "redheads gotta stick together." As a result, he was one of the rare few who was 100% happy with the ending.
his other favourite tv shows included That 70s Show, vintage Law&Order (he was, functionally, Lennie Briscoe in real life), The X-Files, Twin Peaks, True Blood, White Collar, and Rome. We watched pretty much all of them together. Except True Blood.
as a teenager, he got sent home from school for refusing to say the Lord's Prayer. he had no ideological beef with the Lord's Prayer (and was, in fact, a lifelong Christian) he just objected to being told he had to.
when my great-aunt Marian's husband Robert died in a boating accident (by which I mean, he fell off a boat and drowned) my dad and uncle were standing next to the coffin at the visitation, and one of them turned to the other and said, "isn't it funny his name was Bob?"
