Hello! Thank you so so so so much for all the tracks you've put up! I've made a handful as ringtones on my phone and since Origins has A TON of delightful dialogue, I'd be looking forward to your tracks of them! ^^
It might be a while before I post anything for Origins because that game is MASSIVE.
Hi! I was wondering if you could help me decide what to do with my journals. I have two; one is my bullet journal (which I haven't updated in weeks) and another which I haven't used. I really want to get back to bullet journaling but I'd like to try out journaling too. Should I just use my old bujo to do both or keep them in separate journals? Thanks!
u could do it either way honestly its totally up to u!! having it in one journal is rly cute but u can separate them if it will feel more organized!!
if u need some rly quick bullet journal inspiration i made a plan with me video today and i also have all of these resources for u!
Hi! Do you have any advice on learning Kanji and Japanese in general? I've already learned Hiragana and Katakana and I'm working on my Kanji with Wanikani but that's as far as it goes. ^^;
good question! it’s a little difficult for me to give very specific advice, since my japanese studies have been ALL over the place in that i basically took classes, read a lot of stuff, listened to a lot of stuff, did conversation lessons, translated, etc etc etc since language is used everywhere i basically took advantage of anything japanese i could get my hands on. in that respect, i say my general advice is just find something you really like in japanese and push through it, even if you feel like you’re not understanding a single sentence, just getting the gist of something is a small victory imo. setting small, realistic goals for yourself is really super helpful because you keep yourself feeling successful and motivated as you study!
but specifically i’ll go ahead and out myself as a kanji lover... i really enjoy learning about kanji, kanji history, readings, and usage! i actually had some background in mandarin chinese before deepening my kanji study, so i used to rely on the chinese readings of things to guess how the kanji might be read in japanese (unfortunately i’ve lost a lot of that now)
i found that the most helpful thing in learning kanji is learning radicals first (radicals are the basic bits of kanji if you don’t know) and then examining how the kanji are formed from those radicals. that way it doesn’t seem so intimidating imo and it becomes more of a logical system. many books start with the most frequently used kanji... and while that is helpful, i honestly think working from the abstract radical level is really useful in the long run if you are planning to pursue japanese for a while
the thing that often trips me up with kanji is readings (onyomi/kunyomi/ateji/etc). my advice with that is don’t memorize all the readings that are being listed; rather, look for your target kanji in context and see how it’s pronounced there and you can get a better sense of which readings are more important to know -> for example: 生 has a billion readings, but it’s probably more useful (right now) to know せい in the context of 先生 rather than なま in the context of 生ハム (raw ham), since the former reading is used much more frequently and more often than not you can make a good educated guess about what the reading of a kanji is
in general, again, i strongly believe that context is really important in learning language, and isolating kanji/grammar and learning them that way is extremely important, but it should be supplemented with authentic material/stuff produced by a native speaker so you can get a more natural sense of the language! i really hoped some of this helped, and happy learning!
So @kysuisya asked me to teach em how to color manga, so I figured why not make a tutorial of it.
Note: This is how I color manga. This is not the only way to do it. This is just how I do it.
Note.2: I use Gimp(♥) however the controls are basically the same across Sai, Photoshop, etc. (Layer Modes: Screen, Multiply, etc)
Now with that out the way, here we go~
Pre-Steps: Find the image you want to color (of course). I also put on music too.
I’m going with this one because it’s cute and I was going to color it eventually, anyway.
1.One: Well, it’s a little messy so I gotta clean it up.
If you need help with that: x
Ah. Much better.
2.Two: Now you can wing the colors, if you’re very confident in your color picking skills, or you can open a reference image as layers. I chose one of my previous coloring's as I like how it came out, Or you can use a screencap from the show. Whatever floats ya boat.
3.Three: Recently i’ve discovered, I really like how my colorings look with the lines colored different than black. It makes things super easy to start with that.
-Create a New Layer above one with your image. Change the Layer Mode to Screen.
4. Four: Use the Color Picker Tool to grab the color you want (from your ref pic) the lines of the skin to be.Then start painting over the skin lines on your new layer.
-In some spots, you might have to pick what line goes to what (skin lines vs clothes line). My rule of thumb: Whatever is higher at that spot, gets the line.
5.Five: Repeat this step with clothes, hair, etc. until all lines have been colored. (I am a layer whore so each new color gets its own layer.)
6. Six: Next, make sure (if you used one) that your reference image is ‘hidden’. Right Click on any other layer and select Merge Visible Layers.
-After that’s done, I cut the image out from the background. (You can use the eraser or the free select tool.)
This is so it’s easier to make the background later (and also to make other things with this coloring; like icons, phone wallpapers, use in videos (but that’s just me lmao))
7.Seven: Create a New Layer below your image, right click on your image layer, click Alpha to Selection, Bucket Fill white inside your selection on the bottom layer.
This creates a layer that will catch all your colors.
Now we do the colors for the image. I typically do all the base colors then tackle shading for each part. I do it in the order of Skin, Clothes, Misc, Hair. It’s up to you. I know others who do it in a different order.
8.Eight: Change Your Image layer mode to Multiply.
From this point on, New Color, New Layer, Name Layers. It makes things easier and more organized.
-Create a New Layer between Your image, and the bottom layer. Name it skin. (cause that’s where i’m starting.)
9.Nine: Use your Color Picker tool to get the color you wanted for your skin (unless you’re winging it.) Paint in all areas of skin.
-If you go over the line a little, note that it will slightly change the color of your line. That’s okay. If you do this, go over the line in all spots or it will look messy and only go over the lines of the things you’re coloring. (If you’re coloring clothes, do not go over skin lines with clothes colors.)
-Unlike Layer Mode: Screen, if you go over the edge in Multiply, it will show up. Make sure to clean things up as you go :3
10. Ten: Now repeat until you have all base colors.
11.Eleven: Now we need to shade it in. We start by Color Picking whatever the base color is of whatever you’re coloring.
I add anywhere from 1-3 levels of shading to my colorings. For each new shade, I make a new layer. (I don’t actually paint the shades to the side like in the picture. That’s just for example.)
Shade in the shadows where needed. (I don’t use a fuzzy brush for this part. I prefer to go in and Blur my shadows, myself, after i’ve added the shading.
The shadings always gets put above whatever i’m coloring. That way I know what’s what.
12.Twelve: Shade where all desired. (lighting rules be damned. that’showiroll)
13.Thirteen: Blur it as desired.
14.Fourteen: Now for the eyes. I do a similar thing as shading everything else there.
(I didn’t GIF the Blurring of the grey shadows. whoops) For the grey shadow on the eyeball, I thought it was too dark, so i lowered the opacity(s) till it looked right.
15. Fifteen: So for the hair, i change to the Airbrush tool.
I also change the brush from......
to
Then I just shade in where I think the shadows would fall on his tufts of hair (and rattail).
16.Sixteen!!!: This is the last step (besides background but i’ll leave that up to you ;3
Highlights. Little details. But Mainly. Highlights.
-Create a New Layer right at the top (but under your main image layer). This is the layer I work on with highlights.
-First the Hair Highlight: You’re just gonna take your Airbrush tool (still on the same brush), select a light color than the hair and just schwoop across it in a straight-ish line (curve up at his bigolebangs).
Note: it was at this point i realized I failed to color his knee/shorts/pant/type-thing. Make sure you’ve colored every before you finish everything lmao......backtohighlights
-Now for my very favorite part of coloring. The white line highlight.
size: 2. brush on:
I know others do it as “color where the highlight goes naturally” but as i’ve already forgone lighting rules, i highlight-line where i want lol. My usual places are: the tops of the ears, the chin line, knuckles/tips of fingers, shoulders, the nose line. From there i’ll do edges I think need it or (sometimes) along the hair line (on the skin).
From here, I would export this as a .PNG image and then open it again in another window to do that background.
Disclaimer: I have next to no clue how I did that background lmao. I was just dropping stuff to see how it looked.
I hope that helps. If you have any questions, feel free to message me :3
