A lot had changed over the years. The bi-monthly dinners with Kyung-Soon, which had once been a great source of happiness for her, had now become a source of anxiety. May was perfectly comfortable lying to people - hell, it was part of her job - but to the people she was closest to, it wasn’t as easy. Uriel knew her too well, she loved Gwen too much, and with Kyung-Soon, she felt as though she owed her complete honesty. Soon enough, she would be able to be truthful with her, her little sister, but for now, it was another dinner where she had to pretend that a large portion of her time wasn’t taken up with being second-in-command in a rival gang who weren’t even public yet. She couldn’t tell Ky that she knew why she had rearranged the dinner twice, and that only five days previously she had kidnapped the man responsible. She couldn’t tell her that in three days, someone else would be taken. Worst of all, she couldn’t tell her that she knew that she was part of Famine, and that she could get her out. Instead, she had to watch her serve and suffer for the Femenias family, counting down the days until she could do something about it.
May had purposely arrived early, and was already one and a half glasses of red wine in by the time Kyung-Soon appeared. Ordinarily she wasn’t much of a drinker, but the buzz of the alcohol gave her the edge she needed to rattle off falsehoods a little easier. She waved from their corner table as she saw her approach, rising to her feet and immediately pulling Ky into a hug. “Hey you, long time no see,” she said as brightly as she could, arms tightening for a fraction of a second before letting go. The last time May had seen her, she was watching her have the shit beaten out of her on some grainy CCTV footage, two days too late to help. The memory was bitter, and she washed it down with a sip of her wine as she sat. “Sorry I started drinking without you, work was a nightmare from start to finish today.” Another lie - it had been a relaxed day of writing and listening to Emil gossip. “How’ve you been? Do I have to go and fight people at the Hippodrome for working you so hard you keep cancelling on me?”
