Now that that's out of the way, I'd like to start off by saying I have little faith in it going anywhere. I was around when the project was open community with the Sonic Retro forums, and I remember being incredibly turned off to the idea of it when it became clear that this would be a pixel perfect upscaling and smoothing job rather than true HD. You may think that is HD, but it is not. It is essentially the equivalent of putting a smoothing filter on an emulator and upscaling the window to 4X. A true HD remake should add more life to the original. Add texture where the original lacked it, add more detail to things that were simple due to their original size, and just make the game seem more..there. (if that makes any sense at all.)

As such, I wasn't around for when the community aspect was removed and only a specific team of people buckled down for about two to three years to make one whole zone, one unfinished zone that used recolored artwork, and a DRM system that, on top of some shoddy programming, caused many antivirus programs to register it as a keylogger. (and of course caused a shitstorm among the team and the community which resulted in the programmer running off with the source code.)

While the final may have been the programmer's fault, I still do not see this project succeeding. And while I do not wish to halt or slow down progress on it in any way, I do wish that they would at least consider going a slightly different direction with it if they are going to pick up where they left off.

Either way, this is a highly unethical idea in the first place, as it is providing a free version of a commercial game that, as of now, is still being sold by SEGA. I don't care how you view it, it IS piracy, and it IS illegal.
