The bat motif, an extremely unusual and highly evocative image for the period. The bat has the highest rate of homosexuality among mammals and their sexuality was first studied in 1895 by Raymond Rollinat and Édouard Louis Trouessart (French). The image of a bat became a symbol of homosexuality. (x)

carolina “la belle” otero (1868-1965) was a spanish actress, dancer and courtesan. she had a reputation for great beauty and was famous for her numerous lovers; she associated herself with: kaiser wilhelm ii, prince alebert i of monaco, king edward vii, kings of serbia, kings of spain, and grand dukes peter and nicholas nikolaveich of russia. it was rumored six men committed suicide after their love affairs with otero ended but this has never truly been proven, but it is proven that two men did fight a duel over her.
