I like how in Mozart in the Jungle part of the weight of being a great artist is conveyed through the constant dialogue between the living artist and the dead one. It's mostly shown being between Rodrigo and Mozart, but he also talks with Bach and Tchaikovsky. It's also implied that La Fiamma talks with Maria Callas in a similar manner. Hailey's journey to artistic independance is heralded by her discussion with Nannerl Mozart, suggesting that she too will become a great artist. Which just sets Thomas further apart from the other artist characters, since rather than being tormented by the greats as the other characters are, he continually attempts to connect with them through the conducting podium/shrine that he has in his apartment.
