“Reds Rain Snowballs On Police Battalion,” Toronto Star. January 20, 1931. Page 3. ---- Communist Meeting Broken Up in Montreal - Ten Arrests ---- Montreal, Jan. 20 - Communists who held a demonstration for which a permit had been refused by police, had their meeting roughly broken up by constables at the Labor Temple yesterday. Five men were arrested for making inflammatory speeches against the police department and five for obstructing the law. 

The request to hold the meeting was received some time ago, but like numerous others was refused by Chief of Police Langevin. He learned that the demonstration was to be held in any case, and plainclothesmen who visited he hall yesterday reported the speeches were made, urging a march on the city hall to demand work and better police treatment.

The 100 officers who had been held in readiness broke up the meeting and arrested the five speakers. As the officers were leaving the hall a crowd outside peppered them with snowballs. They charged the crowd, used their clubs freely, and made the five additional arrests.

"HUNGARIANS HOLD FETE FOR UNEMPLOYED," Toronto Star. March 19, 1934. Page 2. --- Members of Toronto's Hungarian colony held a festival yesterday in the basement of the Labor Lyceum, Spadina Ave., in aid of the unemployed. Picturesque national costumes featured the fete which topped by a banquet. The photographs here show some of the children who took part, in their quaint national garb. "Laborites Urge Program Of National Construction," Toronto Globe. October 17, 1933. Page 11. ---- A public meeting was held in the Labor Temple last night, at which the Ontario Government's new relief policy was outlined. Speakers deplored the present system of relief, and urged, instead, a construction program on a national scale and under Federal auspices, to commence at the earliest possible moment. A deputation of men from the hostels was present, and outlined the conditions there and the demands that have been made on the Board of Control. The speakers were: James Marsh, United Brotherhood of Carpenters; John McLeod, Bricklayers and Masons International Union; and William Varley, Secretary of the Toronto Building Trades Council. William Dunn of the Toronto District Trades and Labor Council was in the chair.

“Find Hidden Weapons In Sudbury Red Raid,” Toronto Star. January 13, 1931. Page 5. --- Chief Louden Swoops on Meeting - FOur Old Rifles and Toy Pistols --- Special to The Star Sudbury, Jan. 12. - This afternoon Chief Louden, along with eight of his men, raided the Ukrainian temple hall, Spruce St., where members of the Communist party hold their daily meetings. They took possession of four old army service rifles which they found concealed under the stage. There were also six imitation rifles made of wood, and three toy automatic revolvers in the hall. They also searched all that were present in the hall, about twenty in number.

For some time it has been rumored that guns and revolvers were concealed in this hall. No arrested were made.

“Union Plasterers Agree To Five-Day Working Week,” Toronto Globe. May 1, 1928. Page 14. ---- Possibility of a strike of union plasterers which would have a tremendous effect on building operations in Toronto disappeared last night when the union at a meeting in the Labor Temple accepted the five-day working week and existing rates of wages as the settlement of negotiations on a new contract.

The settlement, according to trade union officials, forecast the five-day working week in the building industry. After a brief strike lathers, who preceede plasterers in building operations, obtained the five-day week.

Page 10. --- Mrs. Amstrong of Winnipeg Calls Toronto ‘Dead’ Labor Labor Town --- Mrs. George Armstrong, wife of one of the so-called Winnipeg ‘Reds,’ who is at present confined in the Stoney Mountain Penitentiary, addressed a gathering in the Labor Temple yesterday, and appealed for aid to defend Rev. William Ivens and his associates, who have been committed for trial for attempting to form a Soviet Government.

‘They say one of our strike leaders was a German,’ she declared. ‘I don’t care what a man is if he is white under the skin and a worker. The only alien enemies we have in Canada are the capitalist and the strike-breaker.’

The working classes did not get a square deal, even in prison. The Winnipeg Labor leaders were placed in dingy cells and the manhood was knocked out of them by the ‘system,’ while Thomas Kelley, convicted of stealing a million dollars in connection with the construction of the Manitoba Parliament Buildings, ‘has a private suite of rooms at the Stoney Mountain retreat.’

Expressing her disappointment at the small attendance at the meeting, Mrs. Armstrong said she had formed the opinion that Toronto was a ‘dead Labor town,’ and the Labor leaders here needed a term in prison to wake them up.
