Does loyalty exist anymore?
I limped into the doctor's office this morning and after signing in, I grabbed a seat across from a man wearing an Eagles' shirt. He sneered at me and commented, "You're pretty brave, wearing that Giants' shirt! They suck!!!" So I smiled sweetly at him and said,"I love the New York Giants and yes, they do suck right now, but despite their horrific 0-4 start, they're still my team and I will continue to support them." So he pondered that for a moment and then offered, "You should do what I do when the Eagles suck." And yes, I'll admit it that it took all I had to refrain from saying, "which is pretty much all the time," but instead I asked, "what do you do when the Eagles suck?" to which he replied, "Well I actually have two favorite teams." So I asked increduously, "Who's your other team?" and he answered, "Well I route for the Eagles when they're winning and when they're not, I pick whatever team's hot at the time," and with that, he gets called into see the doctor.
It occurred to then me how little loyalty people have, even regarding something as insignicant as a sports team. Just walk away from your team (job, husband, wife, boyfriend, girlfriend, friend, family member, etc.) if they're not winning, not performing to your expectations. Have two teams...the one you really like, but when things aren't so good with them, just pick "whoever's hot at the time." No need to remain loyal, stick with your team in good times or bad, through better or worse, through SuperBowls and losing seasons. Just get another team. Brilliant.
Problem with that modus operandi is that whatever team you switch to is bound to have a losing season. Problem with that scenario, that tenuous bandaid, is that wherever you go, there you are. "The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves."
Granted, it may be awesome with your "new other team" but the scales are destined to tip in the other direction, and what then? Switch again? How many times? After all, the NFL only has 32 teams. But hell, who knows? They've expanded before.
