Going With It

Why so often in dreams does one thing suddenly become

another, and this is accepted as simply another strand in

the fabric of fanciful narrative? Someone hands me a cup

of water and as I take it, it is now a bowl filled to its brim

spilling over and I cannot hold it with one hand, so it falls

and now I am ashamed, and no one in the dreams says to

me that’s okay, it was just a cup a moment ago, we all saw

what happened—nor do I protest the injustice of such dirty

tricks, the bending of physical identity, transmogrifications

of location and time? Should we not learn something from

our hallucinatory tours, and apply the same sympathy to

our conscious selves, our fellows, and the ever meandering

path of living where sometimes things just change and there

is no reason, no rhyme, just free verse metamorphoses both

instantaneous and irreversible and only as tolerable as we,

the victims to our own need for stability, allow them to be.
