Me: hehe, I'm gonna sketch the different Vlads, from different universes, for the next story that we're writing. Y'know, just some sketches, a bit cartoonish, some outlines, the stylization of their design.

Also me: It's past midnight and I just noticed that I'm drawing them semi-realistic and it's just rough sketches and I need to do the lineart and I'm going to do that tomorrow. Why can't I do simple things, WHY?

~~Also, one of these Vlads is not like the others. You can't guess which one and I'm not gonna tell, because that's a plot twist, or better, a plot revelation.~~

Swords of Mars, the eighth novel In Edgar Rice Burroughs' Barsoom series. Cover by Michael Whelan.

This is Whelan's least favorite of the covers he did for the Barsoom series, mainly for the predominance of the color yellow, which he doesn't like.

This novel is notable in the series for a couple of reasons:

First, John Carter returns as the story protagonist, something he hasn't been since the third book, The Warlord of Mars.

Second, the bulk of the story takes place not on Mars/Barsoom, but on its smaller, nearer moon Phobos/Thuria. There yet more strange races are encountered, and we learn that Thuria's natives call their world Ladan.

Ladan being the coolest of the Vlads, again. This time talking only and directly with the freakin' big baddie, the monster itself, the inhuman capitalist rockstar, mr. Korolkrovi aka "Monarch" Vlad. And guess what? One of them may be physically stronger, but the other has... other strength.

When you live in a cathedral, even dozing off a little by a window can make you feel like you’re pondering the ills of the world. (Ladan knows this and takes advantage of it.)
