Draughtsman Aleworks

Forgive me beer father, for I have sinned. This is my first local post for my current hometown and I realize this is a crime as there are no fewer than a dozen breweries in my own backyard. I picked Draughtsman as the inaugural SB county post because I had yet to visit despite the fact that they’ve been open for about four months and are located away from my work. So on the Thursday eve of Labor day my pal Katie and I made our way over for some brews.

Opened in 2016 at the end of an unassuming cul-de-sac in Goleta, it is the most recent addition of craft beer to this hood. I’ve had their beer and have been a fan but had not made my way to the source. The space is my favorite of the Goleta breweries. It’s spacious but has nooks that make you feel like you’re tucked away if that’s what you’re looking for. We perched upstairs with a bird’s eye view of the goings-on below. A taco truck (more like a pop-up, not the traditional taco truck that we are in imminent danger of hosting on every corner) was in residence offering up what smelled like some fantastic treats, although we didn’t partake.

I did a couple rounds of tasting to get a full range of beers, although there are still a couple I have yet to try. I started with a Dubbel and Irish Red comparison while Katie did the Ambrosia Belgian Citrus Pale Ale. I was a fan of all these selections and had saved my palette for my next round of tastings which would be the IPAs. I spread across the Endurance Session IPA, Severance, and Exuberance. The latter was the strongest flavor offering but not my cup of tea. I thoroughly enjoyed both the Severance and the Session, which was one of the best flavor profile sessions i’ve had around recently. The Buxom Blonde is a good go-to around town if i’m feeling something light and with the Santa Barbara weather that is not an unusual occurrence.

My overall assessment is that Draughtsman is solid. Although I haven’t written up the other Goleta breweries and I don’t want to start too high, I will say that I think this is the most my style. Laid back with good beer and a vibe that didn’t find me fighting for bar space, now that I know what’s here you might find me posting up at the bar more often.

Highland Park Brewery

Highland Park was a new part of LA for me. I’ve spent time in the nearby Eagle Rock (who’s Brewery of the same name is fantastic and on the list to be reviewed officially) and neighboring Pasadena and Glendale. It was a random choice to visit because the ultimate destination for the evening was the Immanuel Presbyterian Church on Wilshire to see Jenny Lewis perform a special show for the 10th anniversary of her album Rabbit Fur Coat. Spoiler alert: it was amazing.

Highland Park Brewery is located within the Hermasillo Bar and Lounge on York Boulevard, which according to the website was a nightclub with an infamous reputation. I believe it. The neighborhood is filled with the usual gentrification, or hipster-cation if you will, of so many communities across the country: record stores, tattoo parlors, restaurants with notable light fixtures, and not-so-divey dive bars crowd the street. I arrived early and because it is Los Angeles, traffic kept my buddy Terrenz from meeting me for a few minutes (actually an hour) which gave me time to assess the scene and settle into my current read, Girl in a Band by Kim Gordon. This is one of those places where I could see a good group of regulars forming. Not only do they offer a wide selection of brews but there’s a solid food offering as well. I can attest that the Fried Chicken Sandwich is a good pairing to the beers on offer. Speaking of beer...

As we were stopping in for a quick meal and catch-up (and if i’m being honest, I was still slightly hungover from the night before) we didn’t try as many beers as my usual roster but combined we had three. I started with the Hello L.A. (West Coast IPA) which was okay but nothing to write home about. I then moved on to the Throwback (Pale Ale from the 90’s) which was much more flavorful and unique. Terrenz grabbed an Expedition Stout which was actually from Bell’s in Michigan. It was a full bodied stout for sure, something for dessert maybe not a dinner accompaniment.

Overall, this isn’t your typical craft/microbrewery in a storage unit but it is a great place to try some local, and not-so-local, craft brews in an interesting LA neighborhood.
