Every six months she had to go in for routine maintenance upon her inhibitor. Sometimes the visits were short, a quick scan to ensure everything was functioning properly and then she was sent on her way. Other times the visits were far longer because an issue was discovered or tweaks needed to be made to the device. On the rare occasion the entire implant was upgraded, but that was often something scheduled far in advance. Today’s visit was turning out to be one of those longer visits as she’d been having more frequent headaches and the readings from the inhibitor were “off” per her doctor.

Good thing she had the day off.

Sighing, she shifted in her seat as she waited for her doctor to return. She was playing on her phone while she waited, but looked up as she thought the lights above flickered. Maybe she was imagining things? The lights looked fine, but just as she shrugged to herself, attention returning to her phone, the building shook.

An earthquake? Did Linkon have those? 

She sat frozen in her seat, again doubting herself. Maybe she’d just imagined the building trembling? Nope. It happened again, harder this time, and the lights definitely flickered. Melody was on her feet in an instant, adrenaline flooding her system as what was definitely the screech of a Wanderer could be heard somewhere within the building.

What the hell was going on? Were the office’s flux stabilizers malfunctioning? With EVER’s reputation that seemed hard to believe, but even as she rushed to the door the snarls grew louder and the building shook again.

She’d been lost in her phone, watching random cat videos, when he approached. She blinks tiredly, eyes following the finger up to the owner. Zayne? There’s a tiny moment of panic, a hand lifting to rub at one cheek absently as she’s painfully aware of the dark circles under her eyes. She looks as though she hasn’t slept more than a few hours in days.

Wait. Miss Melody?

She shifts in her seat, sitting up a bit straighter, and glances around them to see they’re alone. So why is he being so formal? She could almost understand it if they weren’t alone. Then again, Zayne is professional to a fault and they are coworkers. Plus, as far as the hierarchy went, he is her boss. 

She’s too tired for all the thinking her brain is attempting to do and shakes her head as if that will shut her inner thoughts up.

“We’re alone, you don’t need to be so formal,” she adds, reaching for the energy drink beside her, but she pauses. Water? Yeah, she is terrible about staying hydrated, isn’t she? Her hand hovers for a moment longer before she takes the little paper cup of warm water, flushing faintly.

Staying hydrated is supposed to help prevent headaches, not that she really believes that matters in her case. Still, trying to be a good patient solely because of their history, she drinks the little cup of water. 

“I’ve just been having a hard time sleeping lately,” she admits with a mild shrug. “Happens sometimes. I’ll be alright,” she promises. She’s always alright. She has to be.

“Surprised to see you in here,” she continues, teasing him lightly. Dr. Zayne taking a break? Utterly unheard of.

She’s barely made her way down the hallway in the direction of the twins when her phone chimes. She startles slightly; she forgot she didn’t have it silenced. Hurriedly she pulls her phone from her back pocket to silence it again, but pauses upon seeing texts from Sylus. He never wastes any time, does he?

She smiles to herself before even fully opening the messages, color rising to her cheeks as her smile grows. He must have just missed her! She turns and looks back the way she came, weighing her options. He doesn’t know she’s still in his base. She could slip away and act nonchalant as she texts him back, but he’ll definitely see right through that.

He always does.

She doesn’t bother texting him back and instead heads back to his office. Heart fluttering, she peeks inside to find the man consuming her thoughts. “Hey,” she greets, hating how her face feels hot. He’s done nothing and she’s blushing! Damn him.

“How’s tonight?” and she nods to the little homemade coupon on his desk. “I’ll make your favorite,” she promises.

She hummed in response, focusing on his injuries, until his dismissive comment drew her gaze upward to his eyes. “Nothing? Sure,” and her voice was dripping with sarcasm as she applied a butterfly bandage to one cut. It didn’t need stitches, but the bandage would allow the skin to close back together seamlessly and reduce the chance of a scar.

“You should have let the Hunters handle it,” she scolded with a sigh, moving to the next injury. At his sigh she looked up once more, brows lifting. “If you’re very very lucky, the doctor will just send you home with an antibiotic prescription and an order to rest,” but she doubted it, unless she told the attending physician that he was actually her responsibility in the first place.

Did she want to deal with that level of gossip at work? She wasn’t sure.

“What were your grand plans?” Because she hadn’t even known he was in town, but it also wasn’t her business was it? They hadn’t talked much lately, not since he’d moved to Skyhaven.

She wished she hadn’t said anything because that cocky little smirk of his always made her blush. Why? She doesn’t know. The situation could be the most ridiculous or serious in the world, but as soon as he smirked, she blushed. 

However, this time the blush flees fairly quickly as she lifts a hand to her cheek. “What?” A cut? She didn’t feel… Melody winced as her fingers grazed a cut she hadn’t even noticed was there. 

“I… I don’t remember,” she admitted, gently tracing the cut as she tried to get an idea of just how big it was.

“Rafayel…” she sighed into her phone, glancing at her watch. He was ridiculous, but there was true concern rippling through her too. Maybe he was just playing it up, like usual, but what if he wasn’t? She always worried that one day he’d truly need her and that would be the day she didn’t take him seriously.

“I’ll be there shortly,” she promised. “Did you hurt an ankle or a wrist this time?” Or was this just an excuse to draw her to his home? She wished he’d just ask her to come over without the dramatics, but knew he couldn’t help himself.

“You’re a mess, you know that?” she added with a faint smile as she headed for where she’d parked her bike.

“If you could wrap me up in bubble wrap I bet you would,” she complained with a sigh, but a faint smile tugged at her lips. He did worry too much. Getting hurt was just part of how life went for her and she couldn’t put her life on hold for a small injury.

Zayne would probably argue that this particular injury wasn’t small at all, but she’d had worse. “I’ll be careful,” she promised, but her promise only extended to how careful she was capable of being and that was entirely dependent on the situation. “You can’t get rid of me that easily,” she teased, as if he was afraid she might die on him.
