A Contest, Part Two

I am, of course, referring to my “Least Crap Dad of the First Age” contest, announced here. 

Several people mentioned Finarfin. I can’t get behind that. Where was he when his children needed him? In comfy Valinor, attending to his career and trying to be liked by both the Valar and the Teleri. SO SELFISH.

I was quite interested in the mention of Finrod as someone who deliberately chose not to force children into a dark and dangerous world, but, honestly, I am not sure I would trust him to do any better in Valinor. He strikes me as a bit flighty.

So I think the winner has to be Beren, who stands out among all other child-siring Men as the one who got the whole “dying while on a dangerous Manly adventure” thing out of his system BEFORE having kids, and then sensibly moved to the child-friendly suburbs to raise his son. I bet he attended all of Dior’s polo games and school plays, too. Go Beren!

And I will totally write about him, in the near future.

tbqh i thought it was kind of gross but that's bc i don't like fruit-flavored ice creams, and i would always INSIST ON GETTING IT ANYWAY bc THE COLORS OMG

lol i was shocked when i looked it up, i thought "vanilla, blue moon, black cherry" would be a more... um... subtle color scheme

Also available in Indiana (although mainly around the Michigan/Indiana border. Maybe it's a Great Lakes thing?

I genuinely can't remember now if we had it in Illinois or if I just had it when I went to visit my cousins in Michigan...

mm well illinois isnt so far off, itd make sense if it was available! the wikipedia article says "The flavor has been spotted in other Midwest locales, such as Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream Company in Madison, Wisconsin."

Petition to not assume pronoun-free Tolkien characters are men

If I have been misreading or there is another piece of canon I don’t know about I guess I’ll have to eat crow but…why do Wikipedia and all those knock-off Tolkien encyclopedias assume Malbeth the Seer is a man?  To my knowledge Malbeth appears only twice, in The Passing of the Grey Company and Appendix A: Gondor and the Heirs of Anárion.  In neither instance are pronouns used either way, and the common –eth ending for feminine names, plus the precedence for foresighted women in Middle-earth, makes me strongly suspect Malbeth might NOT be a dude.

If Tolkien really didn’t specify, that means that Malbeth exists in the same grey area as Elemmírë the Vanyarin poet, who according to all of tumblr is a) definitely a woman and b) banging Findis.  Can we give Malbeth a similar revival?
