reblog the standalone here!
very different! i had this idea and drew it last year, but wasn't very happy with it, so i revisited it today. this time, i started in grayscale so i could plan out lighting and check my values, then played a bit with gradient mapping.
i do like the scratchy thing i was doing with friend's face in the first, as well as the more cartoon proportions of ralsei, especially the shape of the pants and posing of the feet (blogger just grabbed face in anguish as realization dawned). i wish i referenced the older drawing more for what i liked...
my initial sketch for the second try had proportions similar to the first, but the head was smaller and the legs looked a bit odd, so i stretched him and now he looks a bit stiff. oh well! i'm happy with the lighting, desaturated colors, and friend's longer face and better place in the composition. hoorah!
I really love the way you draw face expressions! Do you have any art inspirations, or advice on how you draw them? You make me wanna practice silly faces!!!
thank you so much!!! :-D that means a lot to me, expressions are probably my favorite things to draw ever
it's difficult for me to list any specific art inspirations, because i feel like i absorb a little bit from the tons of art i see since forever (i think most people do this hehe. what i mean to say is, i haven't sat down to consciously take inspiration from something/study a style). however, i'll use deltarune as an example in this post. i'm very fond of the talk sprite expressions!!
the core of exaggerated expressions is pushing the squash and stretch of the face. emphasizing the way the face creases, like when someone is smiling so huge their smile pushes their cheeks up into their eyes, the wrinkles you get when you push your brows together, or when your nose is scrunched.
that isn't the only way though... often times i'll use the anime box mouth that breaks the face outline for a shocked expression, like a jaw drop. because it's fun :-] (my little rabbit i use very exaggerated expressions for.)
drew a little demo to adjust the expression and see how it changes the expression :-) of course, part of how an expression is interpreted is contextual...
here are some random expressions :-D i hope this helps!
the reblog chain breakup update makes me sad because i really enjoyed when people shared their archeops and archen plush pics on my archen/archeopteryx drawing.
but now, people are discouraged from doing so if they don't want to draw attention away from the original post.
i think to keep drawing you have to have an ego about it BUT not one that obstructs your motivation to improve.. you have an ego about the fact that you can draw good now, but that you can get better and better. and to have that ego you have to accept and embrace all of your bad art, then and forever.
i think people will always draw bad art, no matter how many years of experience in... you will get nowhere without bad art, and this is a fact.

thank you! :-)
coming out of memoircomic's (youtube video) called i review 20 yrs of my own art. my biggest takeaway i needed in this moment was that i want to try not to be an ideas guy anymore, meaning that i want to do less stockpiling of ideas and just go and draw it. paraphrasing, he said if you like an idea now you should draw it, because you will lose interest 5 years later. it's true.........
my yearly art summary will be made soon :-)!!
