At times, of course, this would all seem a li’l confusing when society was expecting me to behave in a way that conflicted with my heart. But even back then, I didn’t pay society any more mind than I do now.” This book is well worth the read. The Lady Chablis, who was born sixty years ago today, was a legendary trans pioneer and drag performer, best known for playing a prominent role in John Berendt’s novel “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil,” and for playing herself in the film adaptation of the same name. Throughout her life, Lady Chablis faced the realities of racism, homophobia, transphobia, and sexism in the Deep South with grace, humor, and resolve. . In a 2013 interview with Savannah Magazine, Lady Chablis reflected on her youth, saying “those were hard times for blacks and gays in Savannah. I try to remind the youth today that they were lucky to have people like me pave the way.” Yet, even with fame, there were those who failed to give Lady Chablis the respect she deserved as a woman: “I was walking through the airport and people would stop me and say, ‘Hey, you’re the lady from the movie.’ … Then I’d walk away and they would say, ‘That’s the drag queen.’ … That hurt me so bad to hear people call me a drag queen. I thought celebrity would change the way people looked at me.” . In the end, as pioneer Laverne Cox said upon learning of the Lady’s passing, Lady Chablis “represents a generation of trans women entertainers we must never forget.” .
