Sitcom Verse: Odd Man Out

Have you ever wondered what would happen if we threw some Marvel characters together, put them into a horrendously bad college rooming situation, and sort of just sat back, relaxed, and watched it all pan out?

Well, that's what iamrockandwheat, scienceandstardust, and ladythorofthunder and I will be attempting to do. (Inspired partially by this.)

Meet Loki Laufeyson. He's the college senior who's just transferred in from out of town, and upon seeing his application, the rooming advisor mistakes him for a girl. He gets placed in a quad with three very, er, unique young women, with no hope of transferring out until next semester rolls around...

Jane Foster is the serious student of the bunch. She's always working hard, pushing herself to the limit, and turning dinnertime into a horribly graphic conversation about anatomy class that day, or storing her leftover science experiments right next to the meatloaf in the fridge (and they look damn similar).

Sif Chambers is a whirlwind of never-ending energy, captain of the fencing club and self-proclaimed leader of the 'ladies of the dorm'. She doesn't exactly take to the male presence in their home kindly, but manages to get herself wound up in mischief alongside him (breaking every appliance he owns, for instance).

Thora Odinson loves sports, loves making life in the dorm a complete and utter mess (in a good way, y'know?), and loves to eat (there have been many a sitcom-worthy story involving pop-tarts - she'd prefer we don't tell a great number of them). She is Jane's best friend, and can usually be found attempting to get Jane to leave her computer.

The title of this mess is Odd Man Out.

It sufficed to say that the relationship between Sigyn and Thor was an interesting one.

On one hand, Thor was technically her family, the sister of her husband. This meant that the two women were bound to one another by a certain tenuous thread of familial honor, meant to protect the greater interests of the royal family, and by extension, one another. It seemed that went without saying however, having very little to do with either Sigyn or Thor as individuals and focusing more on the Asgardian standards of loyalty.

On another level, there was a certain sense of strain to the relationship, a fracture that could at times feel like a great chasm, depending on Loki’s current mood towards his sister. After all, it was her duty as a wife to support him, though she did have a tendency to side with her beloved across the board in a unnecessarily blind sense of the word. There were times when Loki lamented the closeness of his wife and sister, times when he had forbidden it, times when he had encouraged it simply to shift Sigyn’s constant attention elsewhere. Basing their friendship off of another’s feelings made for a tumultuous tidal shift, from time to time.

At the end of the day, however, Thor was perhaps Sigyn’s one true friend. She was the one person who could look upon Loki in his mercurial nature and at times coldness, see all that he had said and done, and still not fault Sigyn entirely for loving him. After all, Thor was his sister, having known the Trickster for the entirety of their lives — she knew well how he was capable of behaving. Perhaps she had her reservations about the unquestioning devotion Sigyn was known to show him, but she was the one person who could be counted upon to see that Loki did have his redeeming factors.

That sort of sympathy was something Sigyn was currently in need of, why she had made her way to Thor’s chambers in hopes of simply spending some time with her. There was a chance Loki would not be fond of such a thing, but he had been fairly explicit in explaining that he simply wanted Sigyn out of his hair. Besides, she was mostly certain Thor would understand the need for discretion.

It was a risk she was willing to take either way she decided, reaching out to knock lightly on the door.

Lassie stopped his groaning to look around the place that he was at now. This wasn't his house. Hell, he didn't even think this was even Santa Barbara anymore.

"Where the hell am I?"

   Sometimes, when Loki and Thor were young, they would play in their mother's gardens. Wild rose bushes were tall as them, climbing higher than they could see, and in the middle of the beautifully laid out garden was a giant tree in which they could climb. It was a willow tree with ladders tacked to the sides. The soft wood of the tree would be exposed in places from the kids kicking at the bark, and yet it was still a healthy and beautiful tree. Loki remembered reading under it.

   He was reading a young children's book on all nine of the realms. He'd learned about them in his studies, but never like this. This studied the cultures, talked about how they got married in Vanaheim versus Jotunheim. He had no idea there were so many different cultures in this place, and he flipped the page eagerly, wanting to learn more.

   Thor was to show up eventually, of course, and ruin his time reading at the base of the tree, but there were some times where he didn't mind that, like today.
