"DANGEROUS"
by Owen Dippie
While the new muralism movement has done wonders to bring art to new audiences there is concern that it comes at a cost to the very graffiti culture that played such an instrumental role in its rise. One facility in Los Angeles however is committed to keeping the culture alive and providing a safe space for artists of all kinds to develop their skills. Ricky Guerrero saw children of the Pico Union neighborhood getting in trouble and decided to do something about it. In 2006 he began working with talented graffiti artist Eli Flores and they opened the doors of @TheGraffLab at Venice Blvd and S Union Ave. With spaces for all kinds of temporary work, from simple tags to large productions, artists of all kinds work alongside each other within a controlled environment. This large wall overlooking the yard is reserved however for more permanent work and in 2015 New Zealand large-scale portrait artist Owen Dippie added the the watchful eyes of Michael Jackson overseeing the activities in the yard. (Read whatever you'd like into Dippie's title for the piece.) @owendippie/
