Ein Mann fragte Imam al-Ghazāli: „Wie betrachtest du das Leben?“ Er antwortete wie folgt: „Ein Onkel erzählte seinem Neffen folgende Geschichte: ‚Ein junger Mann war im Dschungel unterwegs. Hinter ihm hört er überraschend ein Brüllen und als er sich umdreht, sieht er einen Löwen ihm entgegenkommen. Der Mann rennt, so schnell er kann, um sein Leben. Er entdeckt einen Brunnen, springt in diesen hinein und hält sich am Seil fest. Als der junge Mann dann erleichtert war und beruhigt wieder Luft schnappt, hört er unten ein Geräusch und erblickt eine große Schlange. Diese öffnete ihr Maul sehr weit, um ihn zu verschlingen. Nun überlegt der Mann, wie er aus dieser Misere rauskommt. Plötzlich erscheinen jeweils eine schwarze und eine weiße Maus. Sie beginnen am Seil zu nagen. Der Mann schüttelt und rüttelt am Seil in der Hoffnung dadurch die Mäuse verscheuchen zu können. Jedoch vergebens! Die Mäuse nagen weiter, sodass das Seil nahezu reißt. In diesem Moment der Lebensangst entdeckt der junge Mann etwas Honig am Seil. Der Mann beginnt an den Seilfasern zu lecken und der ihm schmeckende Honig lässt ihn die Mäuse, den Löwen und die Schlange vergessen!‘ Da fragte der Neffe: ‚Oh Onkel! Wer ist dieser verrückte Mann? Das Seil reißt gleich ab und er genießt den Honig?!‘ Da antwortete sein Onkel: Dieser junge Mann bist du, oh Neffe! Der Löwe gleicht dem Tod, der uns alle holen wird! Die Schlange steht für das Grab, das uns alle erwartet! Die schwarze Maus ist die Nacht, die weiße Maus ist der Tag. Sie nagen an deinem Seil! Das Seil ist dein Leben!
