Elphias answers to the knock at his door looking quite flustered, but once he sees who is on the other side he smiles, and his ❝ hello, Albus ! Come in ! ❞ that follows accompanies his quick step to the side to let his friend enter his home. He accepts the offered sweets and chocolate with a murmured thanks, holding them to his chest with care so that when he closes the door with his free hand, there are less chances that they will disastrously fall to the floor. 

This does not stop him from adjusting his hold on the sweets once his friend’s back is turned, however. 

❝ I’m glad you came to visit me, Albus, ❞ he says upon reaching his side, thus guiding him towards the living room. When his friend told him that he would be there soon, he cleaned up the room from any mess, opening the high windows to clear the air from any lingering smells; It was all a bit of a rush, but he did free up some space — enough, at least, to let him place the sweets on the table next to plates, a bottle of wine and two accompanying wine glasses without having to move anything else. 

That would’ve been embarrassing, especially with his friend just behind him. It is not that he forgot Albus was coming, understand, it’s just that, focused on painting as he was, he forgot to clean his home, make some order...

❝ I have a bottle of red wine here, which I think would pair up nicely with what you brought, ❞ this he voices while straightening his posture and turning towards him, pointing to the bottle of Pinot Noir with a paint-dotted hand. ❝ But I can get something else from the wine cellar, if you’d prefer ? ❞ a tilt of the head to the side, and his brows furrow in question. ❝ Brandy, firewhiskey... ? ❞ his voice trails off at the wye and, as he tries to remember what else is in his wine cellar, his gaze wanders heavenward, only to return to Albus wide with the suddenness of a thought. ❝ If not, I can always make us some coffee ! ❞

The summer heat is suffocating. Tack on the ramblings of an old man and Severus could not tell you which is worse.

On one hand, if they hoped with all their might, maybe Nimue will take mercy on them for once, and take them out with a well placed heatstroke. On the other, here they are being trained by one of the world’s greatest in the art of the mind and all things related. Where many would consider them fortunate and privileged for such an opportunity, oblivious to the circumstances that landed them here in the first place; on the floor, panting for breath in a pool of their own sweat as a sadist pillaged their mind over and over again. 

No mercy.

No grace.

No sense of compassion to be seen.

Sympathy does not exist in their training space and Severus could only hope that Albus would quit this sense of empathy.

The relating.

The tidbits about his life that he feels Severus would find most sense in; acceptance and belonging. But the time to forge connections with one’s student is long gone. Severus does not crave a bond with their teacher like many did when young. Resentment tints their perception, angry over all things from their past that shaped them to be who they are today; for better or worse.

It doesn’t matter anymore, does it? They’ve reaped what they’ve sowed and here is Albus to see them to the very end of their journey; wherever and whatever that may be. And so they turned over, onto their hands and knees now with their wand gripped tightly within their left hand. Breath is still hard to keep, lungs burning with effort, and sweat dripped from their chin, soiling the ground beneath them.

“I didn’t ask you,”  they spat out between breaths, rising up on one knee and glaring between damp strands of ink. 

“You said you would train me,” Severus began, looking up, “So quit your ramblings and come at me again.”

Failure is not a part of their repertoire.
