under the table,  he pants the right pocket of his trousers,  double checking for the wallet he is unused to carrying.    brown leather one,  barely worn at the edges and filled by about 500 quid,  the identification he acquired undercover during the war,  and an expired credit card assigned to a fake billing address.   as silence passes between them ------ which he deems comfortable and familiar and not at all awkward ------- he recites her coffee order back to himself.   he’s committed to remembering it in hopes he will one day be able to surprise her by knowing it.            /            he wants to ask how many others know it,   how often she comes to this place,   how often she’s lived in london .  .  .   but on principle,    he avoids asking questions he himself won’t answer,   and he’s yet to figure out how to dance around certain details of his life.    

across the street,  a toddler fusses with their mother,   seemingly over wearing a coat,   and he finds himself chuckling,  softly,   but audibly enough for her to hear.    ❛  reminds me of my niece,   ❜   he explains,  nodding in the direction of the window.   ❛  she’s always been stubborn as a bull.   takes after my sister,  who takes after our mother,    who takes after our grandmother.     i didn’t have the privilege of knowing the matriarchs of our family above her,   but i imagine the pattern continues.  ❜

midterm week is literally the most stress free week now that i’m a teacher because i’ve already done the hard work of making the assessments but i don’t yet have to do the hard work of grading them.  so i’m currently offee shop squatting while my car is getting work done and i don’t ?  have anything i Hate To Do at the moment?

      regulus narrows his eyes, presses his lips together like he’s suspicious—but he isn’t, really. it’s so very like kingsley to be careful and considerate where so many of regulus’ other friends are not. 

      hollow, lifeless friendships they are.

      finally he lifts a shoulder, raising both hands up in mock defeat at the ultimatum presented, “i’ll set the dickishness aside for now, yeah?” it’s the best he can do. “but do you ever get the sense that you’re too ‘good’ for the rest of us? honest question.” 

❛ for now.   course.   wouldn’t expect you to quit cold turkey on us.  ❜    there’s a smile playing at the corner of his lips as he wraps his arms around his knees.    bargain made and accepted,   he makes himself smaller to take up less space in the isolation regulus had been trying to self-impose.   it’s a method that’s worked in the past.     

❛ yeah. ❜  honest answer,   given quicker,   maybe,   than some might expect.    but it isn’t as though he hasn’t thought about it before,    hasn’t had it pointed out to him how kind  he is,  how  generous  he is,   how well his mama raised him to be .  .  .     ❛ but i figure if i was actually such a good person,  i wouldn’t think that. ❜
