Although a bit further away from where I live, I do love making the trip over to Temaki in Kitsilano for Japanese food. They have a wide range of Japanese dishes, although I tend to go for the super fresh sashimi, cooked fish, and sushi. I often take out of town visitors here as it has a nice atmosphere, comfortable seating, and is not too noisy so we can hear ourselves talk! Below are some of the dishes I’ve had in the past:
I’m writing this having just completed my three day juice cleanse two days ago. Overall, I have to first say, my experience has been great. For this three day juice cleanse, I went with The Juice Box because it was 100% organic. I chose one day of The Chief cleanse and two days of The Grind cleanse as I was hoping to up the amount of greens I was consuming, and reduce the amount of sugar intake through fruit juices.
The first day I had a headache (more on that later) but by the second day, I was feeling fine and didn’t feel hungry at all. The third day I felt absolutely normal, without any tiredness or crankiness.
So what are my thoughts of this process and the juices?
Pros:
- The Juice Box juices are all 100% organic! Some of the other juiceries in Vancouver are not 100% yet charge similar prices. If I’m drinking juice, I’d like it to be organic, please!
- The fruit juices were all delicious, although I had some difficulty with the Tumeric one.
- The juices come in glass bottles.
- I didn’t feel hungry. It actually takes a while to drink all the juices in a day and in the first day I only managed to drink 5 out of 7! I also incorporated some small snacks, such as nuts and a banana a day, just to keep me going energy-wise during a busy week at work.
- Your body gets a rest from digesting solids and all that juice means good bowel movement! My stomach was very thankful.
Cons
- On my first day, I tried out The Chief as I figured it would ease me in. However, because they were mainly fruit juices, there was a lot of sugar being consumed over the course of the day and it probably contributed to giving me a bit of a headache!
- As touched upon earlier, I found the Tumeric juice was good for a few sips but overall to be too strong in flavour. Not having the ginger might have helped. I think a juice that tastes like curry is already a little funky and the combination really threw me off. I couldn’t even drink two of the bottles out of three in total from the three boxes I ordered. I could have drank this as a small shot once a day or if it was combined with a different fruit juice.
- It would be great to see more variety in the green vegetable juices. The Light Green was quite balanced in flavour, but the Deep Green with Lemon was just too sour, it was so tart to the point where I couldn’t really appreciate or taste the greens in the bottle. It left a weird taste in the mouth too. It would have been nice if the Deep Green had more vegetables/variety of vegetables to give it a more deep leafy vegetable taste. I also felt that it didn’t need the ginger, especially since the Light Green had ginger too. If you are doing the Grind like I did where 6/7 of the juices were green juices, it felt like ginger overkill. My tastebuds really wanted a break. Eventually I figured out how to mitigate this by blending the Light Green and Deep Green together to lessen the tartness.
- It can get a bit tedious at times because you’re trying to sip slowly so you end up feeling like you’re non stop drinking all day, especially when you also are drinking water too!
- It can be a challenge to schedule a three day cleanse. I made sure not to have any social engagements where I would have to eat or drink anything that might disrupt my cleanse, such as solid food, alcohol, caffeine etc, but then unexpected thing arise! For me, it was a last minute out of town visitor only in for the day that I just really really needed to see and with work schedules, the only time available is after work during dinner time when people normally do want to eat and deserve to! So for that one night, I had a few small bites of sashimi while out for dinner.
What I’d do next time:
I would probably still go with the same combination, but spread the fruit juices out over three days and allocate the vegetable juices more evenly across the three days. This would still allow me to get more vegetable juices in, while having two fruit juices a day to change up the palate.
Thank you to The Juice Box for a great cleanse experience. I ordered through Spud.ca and they deliver or you can pick up your juices at a few locations in Vancouver so it is very convenient! I can’t wait to do this again!
