It’s Open That Bottle Night 🍷 @dottieandjohn founded Open That Bottle Night, celebrated annually on the last Saturday in February, for us to finally open that bottle of wine that we have been saving for a special occasion and share it with those we love. Dorothy J. Gaiter and John Brecher conceived and wrote The Wall Street Journal's wine column, "Tastings," from 1998 to 2010. Dorothy and John have been tasting and studying wine since 1973. Serenity and La Motte Pierneef Sauvignon Blanc 🍃 Just in time for our last, languid Summer days, La Motte Pierneef Collection Sauvignon Blanc 2022. Made with Sauvignon Blanc grapes from Elim, and 15% Semillon, it’s fresh with supple citrus characteristics and lingering notes of green pepper and gooseberry. Keeping it in the Family with La Motte 🍇 Without @sauvignonblancsa, there would be no Cabernet Sauvignon. But how is it possible for a green grape to have been part of the parentage of a red grape? “… sauvignon blanc spread to the region around Bordeaux where it spontaneously crossed with cabernet franc, creating cabernet sauvignon sometime before the mid-1750s. (Until the parentage of cabernet sauvignon was discovered via DNA typing by Dr Carole Meredith and her PhD student, John Bowers, at the University of California, Davis in 1996, it was not thought that a red grape could have a white grape as a parent.)” Mother’s Day and Sauvignon Blanc Day provide the perfect occasion to keep it in the family with @lamottewine. The 2020 @lamottewine Sauvignon Blanc is supported by the addition of 8% Semillon. 25% of the grapes originate from the Cape South Coast, while 25% are from Franschhoek and 50% from Stellenbosch. This crisp young wine is complex, with notes of gooseberry and citrus on the nose, followed by abundant tropical fruits and apples on the palate. The 2018 La Motte Cabernet Sauvignon is comprised of grapes from Franschhoek (33%) and Stellenbosch (67%). This stately wine has notes of dark fruit and cigar box characters on the nose, with poised tannins.
