12. "Did you really just say [word]?"
Usually, quarrels make Cedar a little nervous, but right now she's so puzzled by the one going on around her she doesn't know how to feel.
Well. That's not true. Mostly she's annoyed. It keeps distracting her from her drawing, and she needs to get it done before it's time to cook dinner, because she's doing it on the kitchen table while she has her afternoon snack.
"For the last time, I don't swear in front of your kid," Uncle Wick grumbles, crossing his arms against his chest. "That one time with those cursed tourists was an exception."
"Cedar?" Dad is looking at her now, smiling gently. "Sweetpea, do you remember where you heard that word you said earlier? The one that made your grandfather upset?"
Cedar chews a little on the bottom of her pencil, trying to recall. She hadn't thought it would be anything special, but... "Uncle Wick said it. At the beach."
"No I didn't," Lampwick protests immediately, but Pinocchio stops him with a pointed look.
"She can't lie, remember?"
"Yeah, but I'm pretty sure I would know if I'd told someone to puss-in-boots off today!"
The girl perks up instantly upon hearing those words, because oh! That's it! That must be why they can't seem to find an agreement! They got it all wrong! "But you didn't say it today, Uncle Wick."
Both men stop in their tracks and turn to her, though it's just Lampwick who asks, sounding confused: "What did you just say?"
"You said that the last time we went to the beach, when someone was being rude to Raven," Cedar continues helpfully. "Today you told the ice cream man you could hex the ballgown off his mother. It's different."
A beat of silence. Then Pinocchio turns to the other man and says, slowly, coldly: "You have until the count of three to give me a good reason not to kick you out of the house."
Uncle Wick seems to go a little paler underneath his tan, raising his hands in defense. "Now Pinocchio, let's not be so hasty-"
"It just slipped out! You can't blame a guy for an honest mistake, can you-"
"I remember you saying way worse things when we were in school, you hypocrite-"
Lampwick sighs dramatically, getting a hold of the door as he turns to Cedar one last time. "I really need to work with you on that tattling, pretty girl."
Then he's off, Pinocchio hot in his heels in a way that is just a smidge serious, and the child is left watching them go in puzzlement, drawing forgotten as she wonders why grown ups have to be so weird.
