J Church - Commodity (1994)
J Church - All Girl Band
MRR RADIO #1716 DATE: MAY 31, 2020 DJ(S): GREG HARVESTER
Years ago, I posted a link on the blog to this tape on another site, but now it's not available, so I'm reposting it here. This is a ...
I barely use this site anymore. Here’s the J CHURCH demos tape from a few years ago.
J CHURCH - This Song Is For Kathi - On the day that Lance Hahn died,I went home from work, put on this record and started crying as soon as he started singing the first lines of “November”...not because Lance was my friend (because he wasn’t) but because the world had lost such a genuine creative force in the world and “November” is the best song about walking down Mission Street in the rain. There are so many terrible fuckheads in the world who keep living and causing so much pain while such a tender man’s life was cut short. This record is fucking good and I’m holding back tears even now.
J CHURCH - She Said She Wouldn’t Sacrifice - This record is also so fucking good. “Bomb” is such a classic song...and “Sacrifice”...and “Commodity”.
J CHURCH / JONESTOWN - J Town Revisited - I bought this record for a very specific reason and I’ll get to that in a sec. This is the first time I’ve listened to the JONESTOWN side and I do not like it whatsoever. It’s a crappy cover of THE POP GROUP. The J CHURCH song “Favorite Phrase” is one of my all time favorites by them. There’s a certain part of the song that gives me a chill every time and I’m just gonna sit here and wait for it....yep, there it is.
J CHURCH - Kittums In A Coma - Man, this one is weird but good. They cover “Creep” by RADIOHEAD and “Girlfriend In A Coma” by THE SMITHS. They’re both good, but still....One original and it’s not the greatest I’ve heard by them, but that happens when you put out something like 50 7″s.
J CHURCH - Ivy League College - No joke, “Band You Love To Hate” was stuck in my head for about 7 years once. Now that I’m listening to it again, it might happen again. This is the first record I ever owned by them. It’s wonderful. This record introduced me to the music of Nick Lowe.
J CHURCH - No One Has A Future - I have no idea why this one is missing the cover, but it is. “Mariachi Bands” is a fucking classic and it makes me wish for the old Mission (the neighborhood where I live). Also, I just caught myself wildly playing air drums to this song because it’s like that. There’s live versions of “Bomb” and “November” from Gilman on the flip side. They’re both really good, obviously. “Thanks...this one’s for the kids and then JAWBREAKER...their whole damn set is for the kids.”
J CHURCH - Alone At Night - Whatever. This fucking record is so good too. Everyone on this record cover is very attractive. They cover WAT TYLER. My friend Wade is obviously doing back up vocals. I’d recognize his voice anywhere. Shit’s tight.
