“The ouija board does not say that,” Lance said, ripping off the cloth from his eyes and glaring down at the board. He squinted at her, then the planchette “Are you even watching? I told you, I’m doing an experiment, so I need you to pay attention.” He opened the notes app on his phone and passed it over. “A witness claimed to talk with the victim through an ouija board. Obviously I think it’s the ideomotor effect, but they swear it worked, so I want to give it a shot.”

Maybe Lance should have stepped in when he realized Bolest was struggling. First, she was trying to fix her scarf. Then it got caught on her necklace. Then it got caught in her hair. The more the watched, the more he got a kick out of it. At first, he tried to hide his laughter. 

When he found he couldn’t keep it contained anymore, he decided to finally help her instead of being that asshole who didn’t help his significant other when she struggled. After all, they were walking the streets of London. Better help he before she started screaming expletives. 

“Stop, stop,” he chuckled, grabbing her wrists. “At the very least, you must not be cold anymore since you’re so pissed.” He located the main source of the problem– her scarf caught on the zipper of her jacket– and carefully pulled it free.

Lance dropped his messenger bag on the nearby chair and rose his arms. With Bolest, mess wasn’t uncommon. Sometimes he would come home to garments stained red soaking in the sink. Sometimes there’d be a track of mud from a recent “disposal.” This mess, however, was different.

“I can see that,” Lance began, moving to stand in front of her, “but can you not do it while covered in blood? You’re going to ruin the couch.” His gaze flicked over her slight frame. “Is there a mess soaking in our bathroom I’m going to find?” It wouldn’t be the first time Bolest dropped a body in their tub, if so.

Lance only laid down to rest his eyes. On their own accord, they drooped shut as he read an informational pamphlet a client had given him, and instead of pushing through it, Lance decided it would serve the greater good if he put it aside and took a ten minute nap to refresh his mind.

That ten minute nap, however, clearly had a mind of its own. He could tell that far more time had passed not by the amount of light in the room or the warmth of the sheets, but when Bolest crept under the covers alongside him. She was trying to be careful not to wake him. 

“What day is it?” he mumbled. “Time. What time is it?”

“Ha, ha, very funny,” Lance grumbled as he shuffled around a drawer. “The key is around here somewhere...Assuming the cat didn’t eat it.”

“No, tequila’s not my friend,” Lance insisted, pushing the bottle as far away from him as his fingers would allow. It teetered on the edge of counter, but settled as he reached to steady it. “Tequila is bad for me,” he told her, sitting back in his seat. This time he was the one to teeter, but he stayed up. “I don’t like it one bit. Tequila can be your best friend. You can run away with tequila. I’m going to run away with vodka. Vodka? Yeah. It will protect me.”

The sirens were already wailing in the distance. They were far enough that an escape could be made, but so close that it wouldn’t be an easy escape. “What did you expect would happen?” Lance asked, peaking through the nearest window. The glass was broken and the shutters were cracked. He didn’t see any lights yet.

“We have two options,” he told her, turning. “We can hope that I know those in the cruiser and then also hope they don’t hate me. We might be able to find a way to explain…this.” Lance gestured to the mess of information and blood. “Or, we could make a break for it. What do you think?”
