Hithfaeril- Languages

-Hithfaeril can only speak Sindarin and Silvan (Nandorin). She knows a few words of Westron.

- My muse will have a difficult time communicating with one that does not speak the languages that she does. (I think that these threads are fun, so don’t shy away from writing with Hithfaeril because of the language barrier!)

-It should always be assumed that Hith is speaking Nandorin unless otherwise stated by myself in the text.

-If Hith speaks the few words of Westron that she knows, they are heavily accented.

What’s in a name?

It came up during conversation once of this question, “Why are some names spelled differently at different times.” One example, is Mōri and Mouri, or even Hanbe versus Hanbei. The answers are actually separate, and I’m going to take time to answer this!

1) Mōri vs. Mouri

When running around in Samurai Warriors, you may notice that the Mōri clan has a slightly different spelling from the Mori clan. As an English speaker, you may think “Well duh the o is long in both cases here” and will not differentiate it in your speaking at all. However, in Japanese, ō would be a slightly longer o sound. The easiest ways to symbolise this in English, is to either use the ō or to write it as ou. That being said, the Mori clan which Ranmaru is a part of, is phonetically and distinctly separate from the Mōri clan that Motonari and his sons belong to. So, if you are going to write about the Mōri, it’s best to stylize it as Mouri, just to be sure. Alternatively, if you roleplay as Ranmaru, you want to leave the u out of Mori!

2) Hanbe vs. Hanbei

This is simpler to understand than the o, ou nonsense above. Sometimes you will see Hanbei’s name written without the i, or sometimes with two e’s. The purpose is the same as the u, which is to encourage western speakers to say the name correctly. When we see an e at the end of a name, we are want to make it a long e, or ee, sound instead of the ay sound that is correct. Therefore the extra letters are to help guide us. The cool thing here, is the roma-ji would be flexible to your own preferences, as the i doesn’t change the meaning of the name, unlike the u in Mouri.
