I love language so much, and it’s absolutely fascinating to study other languages, even high-level, because you learn so much! not just about history (the history of language though! no wonder Tolkien loved it so much) or words or meanings or syntax but about the myriad of basic sounds and mouth shapings people learn when they’re young, and how that makes it easier or harder to learn new languages based on how similar they are to your birth language(s) … it’s crazy to me how we all have the same mouth structure and yet some people grow up incorporating clicks into their speech, and some have languages where the meaning of words is based almost exclusively on pitch, and even just taking English as an example, where the hard “R” sound is so common, and yet so uncommon in other languages, even other Romance languages, because it isn’t a sound babies make naturally (hence why most babies say “wuh” in place of “rrrh” while they’re learning) … linguistics .. it’s incredible … what’s something you find fascinating about your own language or one you’re learning about?
