It’s May 1, and you know what that means... first day of the Language Journal Challenge! @blackgrad came up with the idea in the original post here, and I mentioned in this post that I was planning to do it for the month of May.

My personal “rules” are as follows: 1. I will write in my journal (the notebook pictured above) in a language that is not English every day. I’m mainly focusing on German for this challenge, but sometimes I like to write in other languages too. 2. Other types of writing in a foreign language during the day don’t count (e.g. I write emails in German for work almost every day, but obviously that’s not a “journal”). 3. If I miss a day due to my schedule being too full to write, no problem, I’ll just extend the challenge one day at the end, for a total of 31 days of language journal practice.

Language Journal Challenge, Day 1:

My favorite local café is open (even though today is a holiday), so I wrote my first language journal entry of the month there, fueled by a galão and a pastel de nata (even though I wasn’t writing in Portuguese... oops).

I wrote three full pages in German, and then two old men sat down near me and started talking in French, so of course I switched to French. I know my brain’s limits; I can’t write in one foreign language while listening to another :X

Language Journal Challenge, Day 2:

Wrote two more pages in German tonight, yay! Not as much as yesterday, but for some reason it was really flowing tonight, so I'm happy.

(Sorry for blurring, but I tend to write about quite personal/"deep" things in my journal - even when doing language practice - so I'm not comfortable posting it completely unblurred. Just showing enough to prove that I actually did it, lol.)

Language Journal Challenge, Day 11 (2019-05-14):

I’ve kept doing the language journal challenge almost daily, but haven’t posted about it in over two weeks... oops :X Expect a backlog of pictures I was too lazy to post, starting now! (Don’t worry, I’ll queue them so y’all don’t get bombarded.)

This was at a café just a short bike ride from my apartment, right on the river. I got an iced matcha latte and a strawberry tart, and wrote for a while.

Language Journal Challenge, Day 3:

- More German journaling (dare I call it... Gernaling?), featuring cute stickers to try and make it look more interesting - the yummy foods I had today (yogurt with raspberries and flax seed, roasted asparagus) - an epic thing my hair did this morning that I really liked (I tiptoed from the bathroom to my bedroom, trying not to move my head too much so it wouldn’t fall down before I could get to my phone and take a pic)

Unexciting post tonight because it’s LATE and I gotta get to bed – but I’m sticking to it! Ahhh, I missed having an excuse to journal in German :)

Language Journal Challenge, Day 6:

Today I actually took a lunch break, for once, and went to the bakery around the corner to get a latte and a piece of strawberry cake and write in German. Afterwards I walked back to work the long way, past the pretty church.
