The Lanthorn:
Hoodworking Lamp of the Wending Way
After sharing some pictures of my Lathe recently, I thought it would be good to also share a bit about the Hoodworking Lamp my partner and I use in our practice—an implement of the Craft we refer to as the Lanthorn.
To forge a Lanthorn, one must find a tree growing within a liminal space in nature—along the boundary of a forest, beneath a naturally formed arch, between auspiciously arrayed boulders/mounds, and at the crossings of deer trails and streams are all wonderful examples. However, one of the most potent instances of this Liminal manifestation in nature can be found in rot—the embodiment of death and the life that is born of it. Any plant found growing from the putrified remains of another living thing, be it animal carcass or felled tree, is considered particularly sacred and potent. Once a tree has been found, one must harvest the wood as prescribed by their practice and need, making sure to do it respectfully and with as little harm or damage done to the plant as possible. The body of the Hood-Working Lamp should be a length of wood that branches at a vertex into three separate limbs (similar to the Rune ‘Algiz.’) It will make itself known to a practitioner through omens, but all the same, it should only be harvested with the permission of the tree (expressed, likewise, through omens, dreams, and divination.) Once harvested and processed as seen fit, the wood is anointed with a mixture made from Flax Oil, three pinches of hearth ash, three pinches of powdered eggshell, and three drops of blood. Finally, the central limb of the wood should be carved or adorned in some way that allows it to be crowned with a candle, and the finished piece should be fumigated with Dragon’s Blood.
For our Hoodworking Lamp, the wood was harvested in the same location as that of my Lathe—a Nurse Log on the periphery of our property (fulfilling the liminal station of rot and rebirth,) from which grows a spattering of ferns and a pair of trees whose roots and trunks have become thoroughly entwined over the years. While the wood of my Lathe came from one of these interwoven trees (a Hagberry,) the wood of the Lanthorn came from the other (an Alder.) As such, these implements share an intimate connection, which has proven an unexpected boon in a number of ways.
Serving as an object of both practical and devotional usage, the Hoodworking Lamp—in its variable forms—is one of the most versatile instruments of the Craft. The Lanthorn, being one amongst those variable forms, serves as an Altar Torch and generalized source of illumination, as well as a powerful devotional implement that represents the Living Landscape, the Flame of the Cunning, and the innumerable Trinities of Divine.
