“EL NUEVO FUEGO”

As many times as I’ve driven down Broadway in Los Angeles, and as big a fan as I am of Wayne Healy and David Botello of East Los Streetscapers, I’m not sure how I missed this 80’ tall wall until yesterday [usually driving the other direction], but happy to have found it. Painted in 1985 this was the first Los Angeles memorial of the 1984 Olympic Games hosted by the city. With 52 years between LA Olympics “The New Fire” is a reference to the Aztec tradition of extinguishing all lights every 52 years and lighting a new torch, restoring fire to the nation. While the demographics of Downtown Los Angeles have seen dramatic changes in recent years the mural highlights some of the minority athletes of the 1984 games, reflecting the makeup of the neighborhood at that time. Among the athletes represented are East LA boxer Paul Gonzales, and LA track star Valerie Brisco-Hooks.
